the .variant file just says what guns (or for modules, what variant) go in which slots, not what the slots are.

if you want to get fancy either make a hullmod with custom behavior or make a bunch of hulls/skins.

Oi, I know you people are averse to checking the trannycords, but someone made a program that converts Starsector and the mods' PNGs to DDS files. It reduces the use of VRAM by nearly 80%, at the cost of bigger files. Anyone checked it out yet? Do the altered textures work with Fast Rendering? Wanna know cuz I haven't been able to play the game in over 3 years.

I like it. Most of the executive officers are pretty balanced except for technical and warfare (in no situation is it bad to take either of these). There’s a surprising amount of cross mod support like sotf and jaydeepiracy adding one or more executive officers, not mentioning standalone mods that just add more executive officers.

>Does Buckbreaker have ships that completely break the game?
Short answer, no.
Long answer, BB is relatively balanced as far as mods go. However, it does come with a hull mod that allows to complete r*pe ships from a few specific mods. Those ships/mods are generally considered game breaking and overpowered, if you don't run those mods you won't notice anything spectacular.
>>
>>2459180
According to you, everybody takes feedback poorly. Have you considered that maybe the problem is you.
>>
>>2459125
It's balanced against vanilla
If you have no problems against Remnants then Buckbreakers aren't much of a difference when fighting against them

But against other mod ships they'll 1 shot you if you use specific mods
or you 1shot those specific mods if you use buckbreaker ships against those

>>
>>2459393
hang out in your space suit outside stations
>>
>>2459393
Bounties are good for farming up weapons and ships you might be interested in collecting, but there are more efficient ways of making money, such as trade contracts and survey missions.

Remember to always try to make the most of your fleet and to try avoiding having a fleet bigger than one you require. Unnecessary ships and crew/marines/officers will eat into your resources and your profits.
>>
>>2459393
Bounty missions can be very easy or completely impossible for an early game fleet. The pay will roughly tell you if it's in your ballpark, around 100k is worth looking at. If they have more or larger ships than you it's usually not worth it.
Bars will have a couple missions that may or may not be possible. If you get a contact, usually through a bar mission, they can also offer you decent missions. You could also just do your own thing. Space trucking is very profitable, as is exploration if you can afford to actually carry all that you find.

aleste's just kinda suck all around if I'm honest
they don't have the weapon slots and flux to really brawl with other ships and have to rely on their swords to dish out real damage, problem is that relying on their swords means that they'll have to go into melee range which ends up with them blocking the firing lines of your other ships while they are forced to endure everything their enemy spits out. it's even worse if they pull themselves in with their harpoon.
i never really use them, I'd rather have vx customs built for support or SO
>>
>>2459768
maybe you could look into missiles that spit out a few more missiles during their flight

I made a fleet of mostly Aleste's with 2 reaper missiles, a beam cannon, and a wingscom built in with two more Alestes with defensive array. Could consistently 1v1 a capital ship. Given that they're shit in any other configuration I was kind of hoping they'd avoid getting nerfed. But I guess they made it so you can get an army of Valken III's now.

There was/is BitchesLeave, it stopped npc females spawing as captains. Doesn't work for custom characters though. You might have to fudge it to get it working with the latest version of the game though, it hasn't been updated in a while.
>>
>>2459980
The base ships are decently balanced and have some neat tactical/loadout limitations that makes them fun to build. I am particularly fond of that one heavy cruiser that has most of it's firepower in side-mounted barbettes that juuuuust have enough arc to have convergence to the front sometimes. It's also nice to use fighters which aren't designed by SOMEONE so buck-broken and vengeful over the drover meta that every fighter he makes is ass and if one survives the buck-breaking it's nerfed next patch. Although the fighters are hit or miss with he balancing.

But the hyperfixation the mod has with supercapitals and battle-carriers is gay and boring and I would much rather them have only carrier capitals and get nothing bigger than a heavy cruiser for ships of the line. And the anime portraits and lore is extremely fucking annoying but these are the people bankrolling the dev so that's what he makes, sucks.
>>
>>2460187
Why would you want to do that when you can run rapesector instead?
>>
>>2459980
People like tranime slop, unfortunately. Real OGs and chads use the Star Federation. Bonus points if they daisy chain their starsector playthrough with a playthrough of FTL, and then roleplaying that they stole the federation flagship after defeating it.
>>
Extended Mode looks like my cup of tea since I already started to experiment with self imposed limits in my playthroughs, but the retirement around 25 cycles in seems silly. I mean I understand the idea behind it, but also fear the execution, that at some point I will just be forced to end my playthrough.
>>
>>2460013
Aleste fighters come in pairs. Now they come in singles since the update basically making that path useless. They also made it less speedy so it can't just get directly behind an enemy and blow out their asses.
>>
>>2460367
I'd probably turn that off, honestly. It doesn't feel immersive to constantly have to fuck around with my build, especially when that's a good chunk of my fleet's power. At least give us something to compensate like legacy powerups or ship reputations like that one mod.

Slightly better performance than the previous generation
Twice the price of the the previous generation (gotta have the latest model™)
Gotta buy in to further TT services (EBC) to get the full benefits
Description and underlying code written with aide of AI (a first for me)
It also has a 'hidden' benefit of not slowing down when firing**

*The temptation is to put the full name in the card title.

The games stable, mods are your problem. The reality is most modders don't know how to fix memory leaks which is why they try and make it a user issue it by telling them they need to increase their RAM and/or restart periodically.

As rule, most vanilla compatible mods, provided they're not heavily scripted, are fine. Tes using lazyLib are relatively leak-free (but not unheard of). Once you get into graphicsLib and magicLib and the more esoteric libraries you'll encounter them.

>>
>>2463425
We've been at 1 update a year for a while, I don't know what you expected that this is shocking for you.
What is new is the time between patch notes and the release, which became the longest ever a while ago and only keeps getting longer.
Supposedly because beta-testing the Diktat storyline is taking ages because of how many branching paths there are, but I am sure Alex's retarded insistence on tacking more things onto the patch that then need to be re-tested again is not helping matters.

And I think the Diktat storyline is good, far from the worst in the game. I would give that award to the princess of persea which is a total fucking nothing-burger and all setup with no payoff.
The only issues with the Diktat storyline are that it's unfinished, the fact that it hands an auto-win to Macario during the initial safehouse raid with no recourse from the player, despite him most likely having his own intelligence apparatus and supporting assets if you start it as a faction leader.
But that's an issue endemic to all quests in the game because despite colony management making up half of the gameplay, David is allergic to actually writing consequences and implications of running a de-facto major power into the plot leading to a insane level of ludo-narrative dissonance.
>>
>>2463464
Look, I just wanna know what the fuck is going on and punch phase niggers in the face already.

>>2463425
What do you mean? Galatia academy storyline is already finished.

There's also the fact you're the only one that has a Janus Device to even USE a gate
>>
>>2463464
But you don’t start as a faction leader. But you do have your own secret gadgets and elite marines. But you’re going up against a major power whose intelligence agency has decades of experience fighting internal power struggles and you’re on their home turf. Macario seeing up your sleeves is what you should expect.

>What's the thought process here? Aggressive Ion Beam?
I was thinking more long range ion cannon. Figure if someone's gonna slap on a rotating barrel and turn the ion cannon into a minigun, someone else would try and turn it into a 'sniper'.

Slapped on the new shield piercing from the maiden missile (50% chance that scales to 100% with enemy flux).

I just find 400/200EMP feels weak, upped it to 500/250 and increase charge time to 0.9 and it feels more in keeping with the intent and brings the flux cost down to a more reasonable 200fps

What killed the Domain? People argue between the Threats and the Shroud, but since Alex is a hack it's going to be neither, do you guys have any schizo theory to share?
>>
>>2464466
The domain is alive and well. The Persean sector is a eugenics program.

While the Threat and the Shroud do not present a risk to the domain, however they are a growing threat. The Shroud are breaching our reality on an ever more frequent basis and the Threat, by virtue of their insatiable replication. The problem is Mankind has grown complacent on the teat of the Domain, there is no unified directive across the stars with each system expecting another to handle any issues that arise. Everyone is a bystander.

By thrusting all the undesirables into a single sector and manufacturing hostilities they are breeding out that complacency and passiveness. The end goal is for those that remain to gain enough self-awareness to take on the Threat and Shroud, then once the localized threat is defeated, reintegrate them in to the wider domain as a weapon of war against existential threats. And if they happen to rape pillage and plunder a few worlds in the process, that's acceptable, a few worlds measured against the countless stars the domain controls is no price at all.
>>
>>2464459
Why does it still have energy smalls
change them all to ballistic
>>
>>2464466
It wouldn't have ever been either.
The threat isn't even a threat to the persean sector, at least currently, because they cannot access hyperspace and don't have a drive capable of reasonably traveling without it, and that's 200 years after the fall. The shroud has also never shown any interest in leaving the abyss even though they are sitting in hyperspace and are either intentionally or unintentionally setting traps for explorers. If they were capable of destroying the domain the persean sector would not be capable of resisting them either so they have no reason to stay in the abyss.

The third option is the most likely answer. The currently unknown entities behind the song. The ones we hear from the gates. We don't really have much to go on there besides that it's very likely related to phase space, the motes, and the "sensor ghosts". AI hates them and the Ziggurat is currently the only way they've physically interacted with the sector, not for lack of trying if they are actually the "sensor ghosts".
>>
>>2464233
>actually piloting a ship instead of using a carrier as a command ship and sending your fleet to do battle
>>
>>2464477
>change them all to ballistic
There's a loose philosophy to each factions ships design, for the KoC military ships:
Smalls are a mix of Ballistic and Energy (Balls in defensive placements, Energy in offensive)
Missiles become composites.
Keep the large(st) Energy as the primary weapon.

Gotta wing-it with synergys and the Oddy has a lot of them. Tempted to keep the broadside all large enemy but composite means it can act as missile support (and in this layout it doesn't have the convergence to turn into an alpha-strike torpedo-barge).

Either current Shroud is a small part of a greater entity that is fucking with the sector and yet to be fully revealed OR the gate bug demons are a separate shroud-like faction that haven't been fully revealed. I'd like bug demons because giving the guardian and the ziggurat (two of the strongest vanilla ships) both organic designs and blatant bug eyes then not utilizing that motif more would be weird. Ziggy resembles Shroud to a degree, but Shroud are more like blobs, although High-tech blue plus Shroud red makes purple, the color of the ziggy and phase ships, which is an interesting coincidence. Shroud might not be able to tread beyond abyssal hyperspace without using the gates, which is why the gate network shutting down stopped them from ruining the sector, and why Omega wants to keep the gates turned off and is guarding the hypershunts. We can't encounter Shroud in normal space, maybe the gate network did something weird like 'pull' systems into abyssal hyperspace, so they could be consumed.

Except we already know Threat is manageable problem that can be overcome, the Domain was able to win once already with a much more primitive technology base.
The sector is in really bad shape sure, but the overall tech level is much higher too.
The Shroud likely as well, to an extent, the Domain had to have been aware of it and able to deal with it so no reason why Perseans can't if given enough time to pick up the broken pieces of it's heavy industry and R&D.
The gate wisps and Omega is are real freaky shit you need to keep an eye out
>>

The Persean Sector is in a Temporal Shell/Phase event and is so far into the future that this question doesn't matter anymore. The Persean Sector wasn't cut off it remained fixed in physical space and the entire galaxy/local cluster drifted away from it. >>
>>2464466
I'm going to spout a lot of speculative bullshit but I think the gate network collapse was either done intentionally by the domain or by omega, in both cases out of self preservation.

I don't think the shrouded dweller has any part to play in this other than proving that there's shit in other dimensions, I don't think it is what is causing the music or the reason why the gates were shut down. It's some kind of predator that, my assumption here, forms the very dense abyssal hyperspace found outside the sector into shapes and forms adequate for whatever it is hunting. The actual creature is never truly seen. Expanding on this I think the sensor ghosts in hyperspace that do things like drain ship drive fields are another example of a similar creature.

Ultimately I think the luddics were right about space travel being satanic and the basis for domain tech for space travel like flux and drive fields is based on the study of what are basically animals from a higher dimension.

I think the bit about phase ships literally being imperceptible in p-space until better sensors were developed is worth mentioning too. There is, in my opinion, something *in* p-space that's an active cognitohazard and the reason why AI cores break down when commandeering phase ships is because of a better awareness compared to humans in the setting.

So. What I think is, there's some kind of higher dimensional entity that needs the gate system to enter n-space from whatever higher dimension it is in, this could very easily be another kind of "animal" like I think the shrouded dweller is. Or maybe it's intelligent and actively aware of the gates as a point of entry. This would be for reasons not explained yet, very bad. Bad enough that the gate system was shut down by the domain with omega acting as guards to keep people away from the hypershunts, or omega acted on its own and shut the gate system down knowing there was something that would try to come through.

>>

if colony and empire building are your biggest draws to the game then unironically no, because those two mechanics aren't really that fleshed out and are fairly bare-bones in vanilla.
The ship combat is good enough, it's the primary focus of the game. Biggest issue I can name from the top of my head is that the AI can sometimes act stupid.

>>2467293
I fucking hate seeing that shit in vids when I’m not even fucking playing. Do other people have no sense of cringe?
>>
>>2467193
Yes and no
The modder in charge works very fast, so he releases a massive new feature every other week(*cough*fuck you Alex you lazy bum*cough*). But coding so fast is bound to fuck shit up so very often you will see him release a patch and then 3 hotfixes in a row to fix CTDs or save-bricking issues.
Since his mod is modular it often happens that he fucks something up in another module while fixing the one he just released.
It's very hard to follow so people often have issues because they didn't update 1 module.

Overall, if you give it some time so he can patch the mod after every major release, and make SURE you have the newest version of each module and requirement you are using - you will be fine, mostly.
>>

>>Fleet size by DP
>Only if you have a skill issue
Do you not understand what fleet size by dp does? It's a hard mode, it nerfs the meta of oops all caps by 50% at minimum. You only get 600dp by default, 30 40dp ships is 1200. In return for this severe nerf it allows you to run more than 30 lower cost ships.

And yet you need to cheat, curious.
The vanilla game having some balance issues does not justify installing mods which have even bigger balance issues or are outright cheats that let you ignore parts of the game.

Nova and Radiant fight with raped CR or sup-par officers, and need heavy investment of skill points to use in your fleet.
Ziggurat is a one-off that costs a whopping 75DP to deploy and is a phase ship that is actually quite easy to pin down if you fuck up and let it get outnumbered. Which with it costing 75DP out of your 240DP budget is not that hard
Onslaught fair, but that's why it's getting nerfed next patch

The issue is, you can't have a discussion about this game as some people have no clue about balance and how it's impacted by mods. No one seems to talk about it apart from borderline shitposters here, so it's really hard to discuss anything but memes/lore.

Unless we start clearly stating listen, mod X is fucked and unbalanced and you should not talk about vanilla encounters since you run with it installed. Nothing will change.

what encounter is even hard in this game. because i played pure vanilla 0.98 in jan and had no issue with fighting zigg, ramenant with a radiant or a nova. the only fight i struggled with was with the THREAT and shrouded dwellers because of their gimmick which once you figure you can easily delete every one of their ships.

Vanilla is not the challenge you think it is. Use 3 Paragons and the game wins itself. Shroud, Threat, Ordo, and Omega all crumble.
>just don't use paragons
So a self-imposed challenge? Because you're asking me to not use the tools the game, in its most vanilla state, is handing me.
This idea of "mod users have no idea about balance" works both ways, because vanilla is already fucked as is.

Round 2!

Lowered the flux and cycle rate and hits a bit harder. Now has the same Flux/EMP as the Ion Beam which tracks given they're both punching through shields. Ion Rifle deals 666 EMP/s (Ions are the devil!) and hard flux making it the better mid-range option. Same base damage would also imply it uses the same fundamental tech as the pulsar...

Personal opinion but the Ion Pulsar is going to make almost any EMP weapon look retarded, 6000 (1200) EMP/s is a lot, even for a knife fighter, that's more than the Abyssal/Tach-Lance. It also has a much lower flux/emp cost.

(Lowered the pierce chance across the board so will also affects maidens...)

>>2468819
It's a mixture of things, the shilling takes place on reddit, youtube and milky's personal discord. (I presume this is about UAF?)

Out of all the content on youtube, the mod review of UAF gets in at top 10 of most viewed Starsector videos I believe. It could easily even be someone's first introduction to Starsector. He even has a patreon where he makes practically 10x the minimum paycheck (up to 3k USD a month) alone where he lives. Though theres always been that one subsection of the community that openly hates on anything anime related even if it's only character pictures but not a word on furry stuff as far as I know.

Hell, many years ago the moment I finished the tutorial, I started looking up mods immediately and UAF was one of the first downloads I made iirc. And it was not inoften I'd see posts on the subreddit made to just praise it. So it's gotten alot more spotlight than other more deservong mods. Someone spent their time to make a near 40 minute video on just their issues with UAF (UAF infinite potential), a mod that's had a decade to sort out it's lore and imbalanced shenanigans, I think I'd listen to what grievances that one has.
>>

I found this post particularly funny because I found UAF through rapesector, which was the mod that I knew existed 2 years before I even knew what starsector was. ArmaA, Diable, Sunrider and creature’s mods are unironic weebshit mods that oddly fits better on SS’ setting than whatever UAF tries to be.
>>
>>2468984
arma and diable are insecure manime dogshit and you merely included sunrider, a mod that just freely hands you a more OP ship than any UAF 10 million credit supercapital with writing that constantly does 4th wall breaks, as a token choice. It's even more guilty of all the things you bring up as bullshit excuses for why you obsess over UAF.

Still, sunrider is great, I like that you get to romance the cure eyepatch girl. I had to go off on a work contract before finishing it but do you get a romance route with the cute cryogenic murderbot girl too?
>>
>>2468984
Fair, but my point stand, making a 40 minutes critic of a mod expecting people to not download it because of poor story integration and balance is underage behavior, people mostly seek mod to add "fun" not for balance and vanilla integration, if they cared so much they would play vanilla instead of seething uncontrollably.

UAF is more like Lucky Star and Haruhi which is /a/ and cringe. Diable is more like Cowboy Bebop and Legend of the Galactic Heroes which is MAL and based. Moeshit does not respect the game's artistic vision. Gay and retarded mecha, on the other hand, totally does.
>>
>>2468986
>shitting on diable and arma
Shit taste
Sunrider is self-contained though, and the author is clear about it being a joke mod of sort, but not like going around parading itself like the “good guys” that UAF tends to advertise itself as.
The supercap is nice, but its built in weapons aren't that good. I prefer having the means to customize my ship and whatnot.
Romancing the girls was nice, the quests are fun too, and wants you to progress more.
>>2468987
So you’re telling me people aren’t allowed to voice out their own criticism, and should just keep praising it to high heavens like that other SS youtuber does? I uninstalled UAF because their guns are all over the place, hard to tell one another and performs pretty much better than their vanilla counterparts, missiles are too spicy and basically solves anything that isn’t an Anubis triple paladin setup, LPCs are self explanatory, story is dogshit. Lastly, it eats up a lot of memory and whatnot, kind of like Interstellar Imperium sorta.
I think that most wants to play faction mods for the fun of it, but not like, being overpowered at the start which UAF blatantly does. Call me biased but other faction mods needs you to work for getting its ships, be it on the fringes, pirate black market dealer, etc. while UAF just hands you an automata(?) supercap at the start already if you pick that option in the nex start. Other choices aren’t so much better considering even the base variants of their ships are still significantly stronger than vanilla’s, and doesn’t really feel fulfilling. But this is a singleplayer game so whatever, but it doesn’t exempt them from scrutiny and criticism.

Story is integral to why Starsector functions at all as a game. Any literal narratives within it aren't, but the gameplay is very much pinned on the "story" built by the player's actions which is contextualized by the world you're playing in (and any shitty mods you may or may not add).
Balance is obviously important to any sandbox game and saying otherwise is too retarded to bother responding to seriously.
>>2468986
>are insecure manime dogshit
Imagine thinking the problem there is the genre and not with the insecurity. The insecurity that comes from wanting anime to be more like western scifi... which starsector is.
>>
>>2468926
>>its place in the SS world
nta but IIRC the dev once said that he knows the UAF doesn't fit Starsector at all and that he doesn't really care because his idea of UAF predates his interest in the game, so he only made the mod to bring his idea to life in a game he likes. i don't think UAF's lore-friendliness is his main concern.
i.e it's less "i want to make a faction for Starsector" and more "I want to use Starsector to make a faction", or at least that's how I remember it

>>2468997
>but the gameplay is very much pinned on the "story" built by the player's actions
None of the factions ever acknowledge the parity in power if you build an empire of 10 size 6 colonies and end up dominating 90% of all sector trade and just treat you like a single size 3 colony upstart to the end. Dolos Macario will look at your combined industrial might of 5 pristine nanoforge worlds printing out every single blueprint known to the sector while raking in millions of credits of profit per month, toss three kinetic blasters and 40k creds at your feet and assume this is totally enough to knock your socks off and convince you to run insurrectionist errands as his lackey. The garbage "narrative" of this game is completely static and unreactive. Have you been smoking angel dust?
>>
>>2468997

Ok, then don't install mods and play vanilla? Experience the story as Alex intended? Don't your realize the moment you install any modification on a base game, you are not playing the game or experiencing the story as the dev intended? I'm going to make it simple for you.
Installing mods is completely optional.

I think it's pretty clear anons claimed many time UAF was indeed an imbalanced waifu tranime mod. I don't really understand what the other side is trying to advance.
>>
>>2469005
I think he was referring to things like the how lore is interwoven like when new ships get explained why they're here even older existing vanilla ships. Invictus? Ancient seedship iirc that Luddics found a blueprint that was so old it was displayed in an abandoned museum iirc. Pirate variants of ships are only roughly made weapon conversions at best or hollowing out cargo space for fighter wings. 'New' ship design in the state of the sector is incredibly difficult to pull off since it requires the cooeration of many groups to get something functional. TT making the Ziggy makes sense since they're what pioneered phase tech but the blacksite shenanigans was so bad that they lost the best minds they sent there. The best the Sindrians could do despite being a gaudy Dictatorship were variants of existing ships even with TT's help iirc.

So you may not play the main storyline yourself, but the lore is still part of the game itself.

Not necessarily, Anusbis desc:

"The Anubis Project steering committee, keen to win support from as many departments as possible, drew upon new applications seeking customer validation from an exceptionally wide range of Tri-Tachyon's suite of breakthrough technologies. The project was then split into parallel operations at a handful of company black-sites to maximize security (and minimize oversight), leading to certain understandable late-stage compromises. It was hoped that the multi-functional product would cover more user-segments than one with more limited focus through a rough roll-out period. Then widespread field testing would surely enable rapid iteration which would lead, ultimately, to product maturity well ahead of conventional timelines.

This was not to be. Executive infighting led to a particularly dynamic org chart during the following financial cycle"

The sector can produce new effective hulls, but it's royal pain in the ass due to how many things could go wrong. The description states they were trying to roll it out quickly but them trying to rush the trials to finagle all the issues and the infighting imply it isn't as good as it could be.

UAF ships have generous flux pools to make up for their weapons being more flux-hungry.
But nothing stops you from slapping vanilla weapons which are less flux intensive, abundant, and usually better overall.
You do that and UAF suddenly stomps, they even have a built-in damage control skill cmon

yeah that'd technically go with what I was saying if I wasn't a retard that was too lazy to quote the part of the Executor description I was talking about
>"After all, why invest in risky innovations when the bones of the Domain provide ships to fill every role?"
it is technically possible, but very expensive and very risky which makes it a very unappealing prospect since there's most likely a hull already fulfilling the role you're trying to modify another ship into fulfilling.

>>
>>2469945
The game can't even handle giving you something as strong as a gimped Radiant because power scaling is exponential while dp scaling is linear. It's simply not possible to ever balance high dp ships. Take the superships from the missing ships mod for a good example. They have a ship called the Anchor. It's something like 100 or 120dp I can't remember and it doesn't really matter it's not even a particularly strong supership, it's a civilian exploration and transport supership. It is also capable of going 1v4 against Radiants in the sim without losing any sections. Theoretically the ship shouldn't be worth 240dp, but that is what it's capable of killing because the survivability and firepower are all packed into a single ship that can easily survive and overwhelm a single 60dp ship. As it should, you might say, and you'd be right, but there comes the problem, it, and other high cost ships like it, will never face anything able to bring to bear an equivalent amount of firepower or survive an equivalent amount of damage. If you could deploy a single 240dp ship it would be the only ship you would ever need if the power was even remotely scaled to the dp cost.
>>
Fighting mod fleets while only using vanilla ships and weapons can be neat
>>
>>2469988
That's what I do. Sometimes I put mod weapons on my vanilla ships and my face grimaces like I swallowed a lemon.
>>
>>2469986
You don't even need to go as far as mods for an example. There's a reason endgame fleets are nothing but capital spam.

Then there's the fact that making a universal content expansion mod, which faction mods are by their nature, is pretty much impossible to do without going into powerscaling because of course you'll want to expand on the endgame, and of course that expansion will eclipse the dogshit starsector "endgame" that consists of fucking paragons, onslaughts and a ziggy all of which you can pick up within the first fucking hour of starting your playthrough. But ritualposting retards desperate to make a name for themselves through shitposting on an anonymous image board will pretend like Starsector is a deep game with rich lore and vast in expertly designed content, and that getting something stronger than this 60 minute "endgame" through completing an entire faction's content and plopping down hundreds of millions of credits somehow "breaks" the fucking game. But then they'll also cry when the mod introduces higher level challenges.

Alex's solution to all of this is of course to take the atrocious lack of content, and just stretch it out into a longer grind. But hey at least your time is well spent spending hours flying back and forth between fetch quest planets for the grand reward of Intergalactic Nonbinary Dykes' Space Adventure text dumps.

How the hell do you make money consistently in this game. I feel like I keep spending everything I make on supplies and fuel.
>>
>>2470373
Get the industry (yellow) skills as you level. Get a commission with a faction for free money every month. Do bar missions. Check the markets and see if you can make some money buying low and selling high. Don't get hit by storms. Buy bulk supplies and fuel where it's cheapest. Consider what ships you need in your fleet for what you're trying to do. Don't take too much extra crew, don't put marines in your fleet if you're not raiding. Most consistent is making a colony but that usually requires a bit of start up money. Retreat ships if they're getting banged up. Play with mods, even something simple and lightweight like more bar missions could be an option for you.

capital ships and cruisers cost way more fuel than destroyers and frigates so only bring them if you think you are going to need them. Repairs cost a lot of supplies so don't take losses during fights and watch out for environmental hazards like the hyperspace storms or sitting in solar corona. You can also invest in skills like the direct reduced cost in industry but also the free repair after battle skill. Hullmods like efficiency overhaul and solar shielding can be used early. Solar shielding can even be used late game since it actually has an in battle effect.

the problem is even more fundamental: any time you add something, it's either occasionally worth using, meaning situational power creep (more specific tools for a given problem), or it's completely worthless or redundant and you needn't have bothered in the first place.

but more options means more variety and complexity, which is also enjoyable, especially when you want more out of a game.

on the other extreme having the game be nothing but laters would certainly be balanced, but hardly interesting.

if you rate it as fuel/ly per DP caps don't really do any worse than other ships. paragon, radiant, oddy and onsl mk1 use less fuel per dp than quite a lot of smaller ships, and even something as thirsty as the legion is less than double over what i'd call average (0.375 vs 0.2).

worst offender? the kite, 0.5 fuel/ly per dp

You gotta spend money to make money. As you spend more money you get bigger fleets which can then make more money to get bigger fleets which can then make more money. There's a critical mass around ~1m where you can create a colony that is capable of making more money than you lose so from then on everything you make is pure profit.
>>
>>2470464
Can't colonizing too early really fuck you over though? There's constant colony crisis.
>>
>>2470503
worst case you abandon it and set up somewhere more profitable. plenty of colonies run a surplus at size 3 with minimal investment.

actually i suppose the actual worst case is you sending good money after bad until you lose everything and have to start from scratch, but hey, skill issue

a single size 3 is free money
>>
Do I have to actually kill the ziggurat to progress the story? If so I'm fucked
>>
>>2470503
You only really get fucked over if you trigger the league crisis early. The others are pretty easy to ignore or deal with. Don't click hazard pay because it both devours your money and makes your colonies grow very fast.
>>
is the cryosleeper AOTD module stable, or at least not a buggy mess that will kill a save file? It's the only one that both interests me and looks like it doesn't fuck with too many systems. Hell, is it safe to add in midsave to test when I get to that part?
>>
>>2470572
AotD (without the commission module) works for me, didn't bug out or murder any saves yet. Don't know where that reputation comes from, any time I played with it, it worked fine.
I don't know about installing the cryosleeper module mid-save though, it probably requires a new game (because vanilla ones generated) and you'll be missing the fancy XXL cryosleeper.
You can always just make a backup and see if it works. My bet is on no, but who knows. Maybe it does re-generate the ships if installed mid-save.

If you're doing the Galatia questline? No. You just need to visit the site (and recover the Venture if you're doing that sidequest too). The Ziggy will try to annoy you if you get too close, but if you don't have a massive fleet you can just... not engage it. You can just leave. It won't attack. Fighting it is 100% optional.
>>
>>2470604
Really? I already recovered the Venture and scanned the site, but I have no indication to return to the academy. The mission marker is still on the ziggurat.

If you think about it, it's similar to how things were in the dreadnought era.
The strategic yardstick of the times were dreadnoughts because the only thing that could realistically engage one was another dreadnought. If given the choice, you would probably want a dread for every combat role ever except maybe picket ship or pursuit ship.
And that's what we have in Starsector, overall the more capitals you can bring to bear the better.

What "balanced" it out in real life? Economy, logistics, and missiles/fighters.
Navies didn't field nothing but battleships, because the logistical/financial requirements of their upkeep would decimate the budget of any and all navies trying to do it. The construction costs of newer and bigger dreadnoughts were eye-watering, the raw materials, their processing, building a yard that can even handle such a massive ship and then it's upkeep. The most advanced technology at the time going into them, the sheer complexity of the design. Then you had to make sure that your global navy could actually use them so you needed said yards all over the place so the ships can be serviced and fueled, or coaled at the time. That's why, while everyone bought, built, used or dreamed of dreadnoughts, there were still cruisers, destroyers, frigates etc.
Then slowly as torpedoes, fighter-bombers and then missiles got better and better, it turned out you can have the same amount of firepower, if not more, on a ship that is a fraction of the cost and logistical footprint, losing one isn't a huge deal, and it could easily be serviced by most yards.

Ironically, Alex has been doing almost everything possible to reinforce capital spam, money became worthless with colonies so their upkeep easy, fighters were made useless, missiles/torpedoes are not a threat even with moderate PD coverage, sans maybe reapers. And a single paladin in a fleet can make them utterly useless.
>>
>>2470794
cont.

Extended mode is Alex blindly stumbling into half of the solution.
Making capitals hard as hell to get and keep running. He should also make it so they cannot recover full CR outside of port, make only Star Fortress tier ports be able to fully restore their hull/CR/D-mods. Revert the fucking psychotic buff the Paladin got, make torpedoes/missiles much more dangerous, and buff fighters significantly along with making them more distinct. The best defense against missiles and fighters should be fighters, and the best way to kill ships quickly should be destroyers loaded to the gills with torpedoes or bombers.
>>
Part of the problem is smallcraft being trash fors the most part and cruisers being strictly worse point-for-point than their capital counterparts.
The game mechanics and resource allocation just don't favor investing into or using many small ships.
>>
>>2470797
While I agree, since reality is also in agreement since WWII, but trying to balance it is probably a nightmare. I think the most recent fighter/bomber nerfs was because it was OP just to run a mostly carrier fleet. Having every battle turn into the Battle of Coral Sea or Battle of Midway will get old real quick.

>>2470814
The fleet size by dp mod at least helps alleviate this, which I don't understand why that isn't the default. Even with the wolfpack skill trying to field a fleet of frigates and destroyers with a 30-ship default cap is suicide against anything but pirates.
>>
>>2470787
You need to interact with the Zig but not defeat it, i.e it needs to catch you but when you have the option to engage you can just spend a story-point to fuck off.

How do you get to the zig quest early enough that you get shitter shattered instantly by it? The quest always triggers post threat for me and I usually have a decently strong fleet by that point. I charge forth, get instantly fluxxed out, then the ziggy gets trapped in gay baby jail trying to phase all the incoming shots while I recover and then we tear it a new asshole once it flux caps.
>>
>>2470961
All I got is a couple cruisers, a carrier and a handful of small shitter ships.

Money is distraction. The primodial truth is murderhobo snowballing.
Supplies are free when you post battle salvage. Every fleet killed grants you supply for a month and another ship to grow. Having a large fleet and marine corps allow you to farm NPCs for sustainment and growth. The game practically throws them at you anyways so play ball.
The only difficulty thing is starting out being a small fish among bigger fish, you will have to avoid getting targeted and pick targets carefully, reduce cost with efficiency overhaul and sindrian shielding if in hyperspace, chaining missions etc.

>There's a critical mass around ~1m where you can create a colony that is capable of making more money than you lose so from then on everything you make is pure profit.
So I'm sitting on 3 million right now for no reason instead of colonizing? Just came across a system with two terrans in it too.
>>
>>2471901
Expand. Expand aggressively.
With a Nanoforge and enough Military Bases, even the Hegemony cock inspection fleets can't do shit to you.
>>
>>2471901
Colonizing does open you up to colonial crisis, which does lock you into babysitting it a little bit unless you have the money and colony items on hand to make it self sufficient against anything but the hardest of crisis fleets.
But in general, yeah.
I often start a colony in the first year of the game. Though it does depend on if I'm feeling another Ithaca run or not, if not it depends on finding and being able to afford to survey and settle a quality planet without dying on the return trip. One time I even threw down an Ithaca colony in the first month of the game and learned that the church's ree why did you steal our planet fleet scales off of your fleet so it was weaker than the tutorial fight.
>>
i settle after finding a colony item, and just pick something with resources that match

food production is incredibly overrated
>>
>>2471945
I don't settle until I get a nanoforge, corrupted or otherwise. I cannot stand seeing all my patrol fleets with 5 d-mods.
>>
>>2471945
I always get raped when I start a colony, whole game slows down and becomes babysitting the colonies because even if I commission with someone and build in their system it always gets rekt, constant shortages, losing money, shipping fleets lost.
>>
>>2472075
The key to colonies is to just accept that there will be shortages and shipping fleets will be lost. Press the free port and use stockpiles buttons, avoid hazard pay. The colony will be profitable and you only pay attention to it when you hit a crisis breakpoint or when you see tri-tach start doing shit because solving their crisis is easy and gets you lodsamone. Stopping by volturn occasionally to buy some lobsters to solve the pirate crisis also gets you some nice income as well.
>>
I think I need a better fleet before I colonize, a handful of cruisers isn't gonna cut it.
>>
>>2472141
rule of thumb is that you have a dependable capital in your fleet before you start with colonies
>>
>>2472256
Can attest to this. Having a capital act as your fleet anchor does wonders.
>>
>>2472141
If you don't press hazard pay you'll have plenty of time to get a better fleet. The entirety of size 3 is just pirates who can be solved without a single fight if you have 1k lobsters, then you have the rest of the crisis bar upon size 4 to prepare as well. If you aren't immediately triggering the entire sector the crisis bar will progress pretty slowly.
>>
>>2472427
>The entirety of size 3 is just pirates who can be solved without a single fight if you have 1k lobsters
and if you don't have a bribe, literally just ignore them. doesn't matter.
>>
Ignore colony crisis
Become the crisis, satbomb everyone, and install console commands to delete the markets that are immune because the sidequests are pointless.
>>
>>2472651
I'm trying to do a nice guy utopia builder run though
>>
What's a good capital ship to pilot yourself? Because I just got my hands on a Legion battlecarrier and got absolutely raped while using it, it's so fucking slow I can't reposition or retreat when I need to.
