ITT: /vst/ games with NO possibility of remastering

You don't need a better remaster than KeeperFX. The latest version even has easy global multiplayer.

I always wondered why this didn't lift off? Is the formula for making a keeperlike actually harder to get right, than it appears? Seems like something that you could very loosely remake and still fit the appeal.

Colonization.
There was a 2008 remaster, and it triggered some of the woke vanguard. For example:
https://web.archive.org/web/20080627220501/http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/06/civilization-iv.html
There was a pushback because the commissars were not yet entrenched in places of power.
The idea of Take-Two Interactive or some other big company publishing a new Colonization game in current year would be unthinkable.

master of magic + caster of magic

The botched unfinished and abandoned demaster killed any possibility of proper refresh

I replayed Dungeon Keeper 1 recently. Dungeon Keeper 1 wasn't as good as my nostalgia made it out to be. It was a product of its time, back when games were simpler and cool concepts like "what if you was the dungeon master?" was fresh and exciting. The gameplay wasn't actually much good. As for Dungeon Keeper 2, I didn't like it as much as the first one, perhaps for the exact same reasons why I couldn't capture Dungeon Keeper 1's magic simply by replaying it. I think there's room for a dungeon management game though, it just can't be clone of Dungeon Keeper.

>Abandonware
>Incredibly niche even at the time
>Likely very easy to break if an attempt is made
>Impossible to get any of the original cast to assist
Fitting since it's another game Molyneux was involved with

The best keeper game is dwarf fortress.
No one has been able to top it so the best they do is rehashes
>>
Best 4x game ever made

Narrative and factions, has writing that is still unmatched even 27 years later

No remake possible due to EA; no sequel possible because of EA

All of Lionhead’s games are impossible to remake. They’re from a very specific period in British culture made by a very specific demographic of white male boomer and Gen X brits. That’s why the new fable game coming out feels so soulless and alien to the original games.
>>
>>2457831
Not to mention Monyluex promises so much and then barely delivers anything close to what he promised.

Beyond earth and alpha centauri could be studied in a university as a case of disparity, something was fundamentally amiss

A huge part of the appeal of these games is the charm/vibe/atmosphere whatever you want to call it as mechanically they aren't that complex. War for the Overworld is a better game that DK1 or 2 but I personally think it doesn't have the same charm

The BE factions were bland nation-states, the importance of which was tied to some minor faction bonuses that quickly became irrelevant given the three main paths (humanmaxxxing, planetmaxxxing, cyborgmaxxxing)

Why remaster when KeeperFX is there?

They stated in the press conference that it was a spiritual successor to AC. They basically said it's a remake in all but name. Then they changed their minds. It was unfinished when released, with no victory movies, and nothing that made AC great. The buildings weren't thematic; it was just sad. extremly so.

It had a fungus map and a planet awakening ending wow, it was awful. And the missions/stories were shit. Then they tried to say, "Oh yeah, it's a spiritual successor, " just in time for the expansion.

That added floating moving cities; probably the only decent thing, with the satellite buff mechanic. Also, Sid basically had to help fix the game along with a new game director. But it was too late. I have over 320 hours in this game. I really tried to like it, but it's not just bad its an insult to Brian and AC fans.

If you want something similar, play Pandora First Contact.

The planet AI is insane, but hey, it's more AC than Beyond Earth.

>Why remaster when KeeperFX is there?
And it added basically everything you'd want from a remaster.
Unlock game speed from framerate? Check.
Add a true Z-axis, so flying creatures can avoid certain low-level attacks? Check.
Better zoom? Check.
Improved controls? Check.
Extra bug fixes? Check.

nowadays half the good rides are under maintenance/closed and every corner contains a carnival stand selling chinesium stuffed animals. it all started going down hill with the IP lego sets.

i thought the asshole game producer or director did produce a freemium remake on android/iOS? it's shit. literally pay forever to win at anything. google/apple should ban him but they're evil asses too.
>>
>>2469228
OpenTS has just been released, and the developers say it will serve as the foundation for future RA2 and Yuri’s Revenge decompilation projects. They’re still keeping things pretty mysterious, but there’s more hope than ever.

I quite liked War For the Overworld.
I pirated it, but then it got me laughing and I felt compelled to pay for it.

It's worth playing over just replaying dungeon keeper 1+2 another time, but I guess a fault with it was that it didn't really push the idea forward much, but if you want a deeper game where you tunnel around and make rooms, there's Dwarf Fortress.
>>
>>2460598
I genuinely don't get it.
If someone was making an expansion for a game, modding a game or updating a game, and they're like "sorry this is too messy to add on top of this existing game, it's not built for it", but they made the game from scratch, and then can't make a town enchantment that makes it so only flying units can enter the town square?

Do actual people demand remasters over sequels/expansions? I love Brutal Legend, but I don't want a Brutal Legend remaster, I want more Brutal Legend. I don't want Majesty remaster I want more of it. Add heroes doing more stupid shit, add monsters/enemies that do some insidious shit like STEALING gold from your tax collectors and using to screw you over. I don't want AI or some program to upscale a tax collector's face by randomly deciding what pixels should fill the void between the old ones so that some marketer could tell people they are back in Ardania.

Can’t believe I’ve found another player of Pandora. I remember playing that game as a stopgap to satisfy my wait for Beyond Earth and then being disappointed when it actually felt like a step down playing BE lol

Coolest story in all UFO/XCOM games, fan, copycats and official.
>>
>>2478964
NuCom made a decade earlier and it was realtime. Im surprised some euros didnt try to revive the series after Xcom killed itself like three times now.
>>
>>2479003
No meaningful story or leaders
aliens deathrape you so badly that it's unplayable at lower difficulties due to some odd glitch
somehow the color palette of Pandora is eye-melting

I wonder why it wasn't more popular... hmm

If you don't mind a space fantasy, EL1 & EL2 are ok
>>
>>2479000
They did make another game set in Ardania but most people didnt play Warlock Master of the Arcane.

Coding in low-level languages is the kind of autism that isn't taught in 99.9% of modern university classes (not to mention high school equivalents) and compared to using high-level and popular ones, it's pure CBT.
Even most of the OGs who did that back in the day and are still alive for sure forgot about it and would have to relearn it if anything.
And the few that do know are much better off coding actual important software that needs such skills (e.g. firmware, drivers and OS kernels) where they won't be subject to the utter travesty and hell that is the modern gaming industry.
With that said, it's still a travesty that nobody can actually recreate a proper MoM successor, not to mention improve it, even with all the fancy modern tech available.
>>
>>2459046
Beyond Earth failed as a worthy successor because it did not understand the main political narrative inherent in SMAC, which was that nationality is increasingly less important and ideology is increasingly more important - and that's really been the case since the Cold War. While each faction in SMAC has some cultural flavoring, they do not represent any particular nation, ethnicity, or even culture as such. They are purely belief systems and nothing else.
Meanwhile, Beyond Earth focused on sponsorships, which while an interesting concept just turned into "the American corporation, the Australian corporation, the Russian corporation, etc etc".
>>
>>2479038
>it was realtime
Not fully. It used a sort of stopwatch mode, where each action took a set amount of time (depending on the unit's speed stat and encumbrance level). It was closer to the continuous phase-based modes some JRPGs use(d). You had multiple autopause conditions, sort of like X-Com: Apocalypse RT.
>>
>>2484094
The sponsorship idea was done better in Surviving Mars.

While I'm inclined to agree partly, SMAC was far more cerebral than Beyond Earth. (It tried with the whole 3 pathways you could go; it didn't do much save unit types and the odd building and leadership dressing)

Narratively, everything in SM|AC tells a story, from the interludes to quotes on technologies and wonders. BE again tries with its mission/quest system but again fails. Heck, when I first bought it, it had zero victory cutscenes.

desu it was THE biggest gaming letdown i had in a while. It's like saying we're making X-COM: Terror in the Deep, but set it on the ice moon of Europa and have humans as the enemy
