I always wondered why this didn't lift off? Is the formula for making a keeperlike actually harder to get right, than it appears? Seems like something that you could very loosely remake and still fit the appeal.

There was a 2008 remaster, and it triggered some of the woke vanguard. For example:

There was a pushback because the commissars were not yet entrenched in places of power.
The idea of Take-Two Interactive or some other big company publishing a new Colonization game in current year would be unthinkable.

I replayed Dungeon Keeper 1 recently. Dungeon Keeper 1 wasn't as good as my nostalgia made it out to be. It was a product of its time, back when games were simpler and cool concepts like "what if you was the dungeon master?" was fresh and exciting. The gameplay wasn't actually much good. As for Dungeon Keeper 2, I didn't like it as much as the first one, perhaps for the exact same reasons why I couldn't capture Dungeon Keeper 1's magic simply by replaying it. I think there's room for a dungeon management game though, it just can't be clone of Dungeon Keeper.

All of Lionhead’s games are impossible to remake. They’re from a very specific period in British culture made by a very specific demographic of white male boomer and Gen X brits. That’s why the new fable game coming out feels so soulless and alien to the original games.
