They should definitely get it alongside a bunch of other europeans in place of cavalry archers.
That unit has always been weird for a ton of civs.

Really wish this DLC fixes the architecture sets of old civs though
>Bohemians should use Central Europe set
>Persians should use Central Asian set
>Byz, Bulgarians, Armenians and Georgians desperately need their own set
>Same for all the Chinese and adjacent civs

honestly they should end the story with him being king of norway instead of his pathetic failed attempt at seizing England

that's what I'm afraid of, that they'll turn history into lame and retarded viking wish fulfilment fantasy
some of the best most memorable campaigns have tragic endings, Joan of Arc burned at the stake, Jadwiga died in childbirth, Alexander was died grief-striken surrounded by the sycophants who would kill his family and shatter his empire
but that's what makes history compelling, people make mistakes and 30+ years of military experience won't stop you from getting shot in the throat in some random northern English bridge
it was a doomed expedition from the start and Tostig set Hardrada up for failure by overpromising how much support he could gather and how much difficulty Harold would have gathering an army and marching north, not only that even if Hardrada had somehow beaten Harold, William would have 100% raped whatever was left of his army, if they somehow turn this into "and then Harald kills Harold and the Vikings live happily ever after :D" it will definitely be disappointing
>>
>three vikingdoms
it's shit for all the same reasons but you dumbasses will eat it up
>>
I wish they would at least rename the Vikings to Norwegians.
>>
>>2459695
>Bohemians should use Central Europe set
They should get a Catholic church but otherwise the Eastern European set fits them better.
Central European set is chock-full of half-timbered buildings and that practically didn't exist in Bohemia and Moravia outside of very specific building contexts. Which is the as Poland/Hungary and the rest and a stark difference from Germany/France/England where this shit practically defines the Medieval building look.
Of course it's still based more on the Baltic architecture with reddish bricks but that sort of thing is just a matter of what soil you're working with. The underlying architecture is correct for them (other than the romanticist Russian tower on the Archery Range), at least within reason as far as the obviously fairytale/romanticist medieval look of AoE2 can be considered in any way representative of shit.

not really a vikingfag but its just common sense that brown people are vile, disgusting and you don't want anything to do with them. Preferably you want them gone, forever. While white people are naturally designated overlords of our planet and species due to supreme intelligence and cunning.
Keep in mind vikings literally discovered long distance sea and ocean travel navigation, while arabs just took a stroll to the left and grabbed whatever niggers they could find to enslave. There's simply no comparison in terms of actual effort and impact on civilization.

Just because Civilization 5 intro said so doesn't mean it's entirely true. And it didn't impact the world at all since it was just ooga booga islanders visiting other ooga booga tribes nearby to trade and rape each other.

I'm so terrified they'll give the new retarded regional units to the Vikings, the units end up being OP as fuck, and then they nerf and destroy the Vikings because they refuse to admit they're retarded and revert their shitty new additions to a classic civ. no one has ever addressed the fact that hand cannons are an imperial only counter unit that costs gold. just saying "technically they are more resource efficient than arbs against pure infantry" doesn't reflect how they actually play out in pro games. normally if a civ has a bonus for a unit you can play around that unit. if you are vietnamese you can go skirms. if you are romans you can go infantry. if you are burgundians you are trolling if you don't go cavalier. no civ, not even ones that get them early or for free, can start a game and say "I'm going hand cannons."

Frankly, as a girl who completely ignored the Latinx DLC and only bought it during the Summer Sale on Steam out of pity to round up a Steam Summer Sale Trading card, the dev team has to pull off something amazing to bring me back into AoE2. To be fair none of those work because the game takes place by design in the New World. Given the era, the only place you can start building towns from scratch is the Americas, Europe would have to start with everything already built.
>>
>>2461108
AoE3 just went too hard on weird design choices while ignoring others. Balance is all over the place and DE's obsession with ever-granular unit splits is super offputting.
>>
Speaking of, while I was browsing cards to make a list of civs bonuses for the new Independence Mode, I started to wonder if they'll ever make a water rework for AoE III like they did with II (and I think IV) because right now is just warship, stronger warship, strongest warship, anti-building ship for most civilizations.
>>
>>2461441
I don't know what you could do with it since that's basically how warships at the time functioned. The more cannons you had, the better.

>>
>>2460360
I would say no, because the Briton identity is more high medieval English, which is a blend of different Germanic tribes which includes Saxons, but is not exclusively comprised of them. The three main peoples who created England were the Angles (from which we get the term "Anglo" and the name England, and whose tongue, Anglish, became English with a vowel shift), the Jutes, from Jutland (so basically Danes by another name) and finally, the "Saxons" which was kind of a vague term the post-Roman population of Gaul and Britain applied broadly to various coastal raiders from Germany. In fact, you can think of the term "Saxon" in late Antiquity as being an early synonym for "Viking". If you spoke a Germanic language and carried out waterborne raids in the north, you were a Saxon, basically.
>>
>>2461108
The actual history of that era is difficult to portray without a lot of performative hand-wringing and apologetics, what with all the slavery and genocide / subjugation of native peoples. Also, these events are a lot more recent, and involve nations that exist today, not distant, long-dissolved empires and kingdoms. Doing conspiracy theory and fantasy shit is a safe route to avoid controversy and, more importantly, fun-ruining anticolonial screeds. They'd be screwed if they tried to deal with the "real history" because they either get accused of glorifying imperialism and colonialism or they make a boring shitty game that tries to anachronistically critique colonialism and imperialism, which people at the time thought was totally baller.
>>
>>2461627
>The actual history of that era is difficult to portray
The hell it is, they could've just focused on European conflicts during the time period. Lord knows there were enough of them. They CHOSE to make it themed on colonialism. Don't make excuses for them having to tiptoe around a subject they shoved into the game, making it a core part of it, completely unasked for. I don't know a single person who would be sad if they removed the colonial home city shit from AoE3
>>
>>2461432
They tried to do way too much with AoE3. AoE2 felt like a refined version of AoE1, but AoE3 is a completely different game. They didn't just set it in a different era, they changed too many core mechanics.
>>
>>2461629
>They CHOSE to make it themed on colonialism
Ironically they did this to be more "inclusive", since it would allow them to put more colored people in the game while keeping to a coherent historical theme / tech level. These days you couldn't make a game like AoE3 without a lot of historical revisionism. Imagine every other musketeer you recruit is black or female.
>>
>>2461106
At some point they stopped calling them Saxons (maybe after they settled Britain?) and started calling them Vikings. But it was basically the same group of people engaged in the same kind of maritime raiding and adventuring.
>>
>>2461608
Exactly, Goths rolling through late roman-europe aren't and were not called Vikings, they are called Visigoths and Ostrogoths when not just called Goths.
Geats and Gutes who stayed behind are called Swedes/Varangians/Rus.
>>2461625
>you can think of the term "Saxon" in late Antiquity as being an early synonym for "Viking". If you spoke a Germanic language and carried out waterborne raids in the north, you were a Saxon, basically.
No.
>>2461632
>At some point they stopped calling them Saxons (maybe after they settled Britain?) and started calling them Vikings.
> But it was basically the same group of people engaged in the same kind of maritime raiding and adventuring.
No.
Saxon was never a collective name for Germanics outside of the Saxon tribes (you know, the ones that carried saex), the Anglo-Saxons and Jutes all migrated to Britain after being invited to fight as mercenaries for local warlords.
>>
>>2461002
They started with the era shift in mind first and went "what should we change in the gameplay to make it fit?" So we got weird mechanics like shipments and no dropoff points

Not having historical campaigns was just a bad call, could have had the cortez expedition, the american revolution and the napoleonic wars in the same game

The Saxon tribes were from the regions around the river Elbe in northern Germany. They are not Scandinavian and the migration to Britain happened hundreds of years before the Viking age. The catch all term for the Germanic tribes that settled Britain wasn't Saxon but Angles. The Saxon tribes that stayed in northern Germany were conquored by the Franks at the start of the Viking age too so there is no reason to include them as Vikings. No idea why you think that you are correct about anything.

So you'd get a gunpowder equivalent of Helepolis spam? That would be hilarious. Though I really don't get this frequent complaint about 3's counters and unit stats even though they simplified them to the maximum.
>>
>>2461969
I'm not saying to make it entirely like AoE1, just the damage/armor stuff.
Everyone complains about the billion % damage changes units have vs each other where nothing makes sense, villagers deal more melee damage than pikemen, gun guy counters gun guy, culverins being useless vs anything not canon, ranged cavalry suck at raiding, etc
if there was nothing like that and just flat damage and armor everyone would be happier.
>>
>>2461975
>I'm not saying to make it entirely like AoE1
>but I do mean to make it entirely like AoE1
You know AoE2 has a billion hidden bonus damage values, counters that don't make sense, villagers that deal more damage than spearmen, and an assortment of weird vidya logic for the sake of balance? Even though it's confusing and stupid, people just suck it up and learn it as they play.
And how is damage/armor supposed to be more legible than consistent percentages? In 3 when a unit has 20% melee resistance, you can easily tell that it takes only 80% damage or in other words behaves as if it had 25% extra 'melee' health, so it's straightforward to calculate what you have exactly.

Percentage defense creates less interesting scenarios. Units such as the Chu Ko Nu in AoE2 are good because of the many arrows beating high pierce armor and dealing more minimum damage total. It makes it so high armor units can be dealt with in different ways other than just armor piercing or whatever.
Not only that but added attack values are way easier to memorize and plan around than % multipliers to base damage.
Either way the goal of what i said is to have LESS hidden values and clearer end results of unit interactions.
AoE2 best units aren't even dependant on bonus damage such as crossbows and knights.
>>
>>2462293
>Chu Ko Nu in AoE2
Actually a good example of hidden stat bullshit (same goes for extra arrows from buildings). You think all the arrows are the same but extra arrows have different hidden stats, and the reason rams take more damage than normal is is the hidden 0 melee damage in extras.
>added attack values are way easier to memorize
Easier how? There are dozens of these bonus damage values and they vary by age while the percentages in AoE3 are consistent. And calculating damage in AoE2 is not straightforward at all, there's a whole ass formula for base damage/armor, bonus damage/armor, building damage, while AoE3 only has multipliers and resistances.
In practice you don't calculate AoE2's values, if anything you only memorize how many hits each unit can tank with/without upgrades.
>AoE2 best units aren't even dependant on bonus damage such as crossbows and knights.
So are musketeers and cuirassiers in 3.

I think it's fun.
It's more alike AoE2 than something like AoE3 was, it's got some key differences that some people can't stand but I think as its own thing it's a great game.
Also it's got a lot of attention to details when it comes to unit/building visuals and none of the ahistorical civs AoE2 has with the noticeable exception of Joan D'arc shooting a blunderbuss from horseback.

Well you've got stuff like the "Mangudai" which is not a real world, but at least the horsearcher it depicts is okay. Any lore/purpose/explanation is going to be bullshit, it's a meme that originated in the US Army with a random Mongolian-sounding name.
Arabs (Abbasids) get obligatory camelry troops. They no longer throw scimitars at folks but that doesn't make them any less bullshit.
The wonders/landmarks got rid of Austro-Hungarian cathedrals (Franks) and replaced them with German Art-Deco installations (Barbican of the Sun), Iron Age dolmens ("Mongolian" Deer Stones) and stainless steel statues (Mongol wonder). Malians employ 18th-19th century Beninese sharpshooters with American Civil War era rifles.

Somewhere deep in the game's development history, they probably did set up some semblance of a unified and reasonable time-frame (1000-1500) and research but it did not last 'till launch and post-launch stuff threw a wrench in it. Hence why clearly Vienna-period Ottomans face off with late East Roman legionnaires in Age 1.

It's basically a tougher doppelsoldner that recovers hit points even in combat and redirects damage towards himself. The problem is that Livonia is one of the new Fortress Age revolts, but unlike the Cossack Hetmanate (or the mexishit revolts), you can't age up anymore, and the unlocks/bonus don't justify being stuck in Fortress Age: instead of changing settlers, each one spawns one of the new militia units that dutch, germans and poles use (and they didn't had a card to reduce their hp drain).

Which historical person would you like to see getting an AoE2 campaign (no matter how possible it is)?
For me it's Basil II. I've been reading about him lately. His story does have plenty of military campaigns and interesting related characters. Beside Bulgarians you'd be fighting against Saracens, Byzantines, Georgians, Armenians and maybe Cumans representing Khanate. The more I'm annoyed the current Byzantine campaign follow a completely fictional noble family.

Unpopular opinion: AOE2 was better before microsoft smelled money and started investing again.

Look, I aplaud some new updates and general interest into the game. But the pumping out of new civs felt very similar to what happened to LoL after S3.
It's not just the addition of new civs on its own, it's the retarded new mechanics that don't match the general feel of all the classic ones. Donkeys with carts, knights that charge up attacks for more damage... it makes a good simple game suddenly more complicated and simply ruins the authentic feel of what we were always used to.

My playing time has slowly went down till a day I realized I hadn't played the game in a long time. And I had played it continuously since the early 00s.

But I guess that's just me. I don't like change.

unlike the older games Age4 was something mandated from above, I'm willing to bet the Medieval theme wasn't something chosen out of passion for the time period, it was just a decision from above taken because AoE2 is the most popular game in the series

I'm tired of all the new civs and units and gimmicks. It's fucking illegal to just be a casul in this game.
What makes me more mad is reading all the autists talking about how they can't comprehend how someone may not like AoE2 adding more and more and more shit like it's LoL characters. How "this makes the game more interesting". How "learning all the new things makes the game more fun!". It's like they can't comprehend that some AoE2 players only play like 1-2 games a week or maybe even a month, and aren't interested in keeping up with the brand new BS gimmick, sometimes not even that new.
I know that by the nature of the genre RTS attracts spergs but this autistic lack of empathy to a probably decently sized demographic of the game makes me seethe. These "ADD MORE CIVS THERES TOO LITTLE ADD MORE CIVS ITS ALWAYS GOOD FOR THE GAME" morons remind me a lot of DBZ fans. What's even worse is that if we still had the civs we had around the time DE released they would 100% still perfectly enjoy the game, and so would I. This bloat only serves to make customers like ME miserable. Or is someone actually going to attempt to convince me that the 3 kingdoms DLC is the reason they came back to the game? Or that the new american civs are what keeps them playing?

I know it's a reddit thing to care about community events, but I can't stop thinking of the Regicide Rumble tournament finale from last week, which is a diplomacy tournament, where first place offered second place a portion of his winnings if he threw and him finish his Wonder victory after they were neck and neck with wonder construction. The timestamp is here and it goes an hour but desu it's not worth watching
https://www.youtube.com/live/NmfEgaVSkS4?&t=14037

The tournament logic at the time was "Well any diplomacy is allowed and let's be honest there's no way that they actually give that money and it was offered in the form of second place and sniping third place's king", literally "I pay you to delete your wonder but you get easy money". Isn't this just rigging? I know these events aren't supposed to be serious but didn't first place just win hundreds of dollars by just bribing second place to take easy money? They were by far not the best players in this tournament, doubly so when first and second seemingly swap between two players who begin actively colluding and discussing real money being exchanged.

this page 136 of the Talhoffer Fechtbuch, a German fencing manual created by Hans Talhoffer in 1467 for Graf Eberhardt von Württemberg
In his section on mounted fencing Master Talhoffer explains how to best employ the crossbow while mounted, including a section on how to shoot it backwards while gaining distance from pursuing attackers.

It's fine. I think the voices and music are great and the pathfinding is nice, but it was basically unpatched for its first year of release, even when there were obvious game-breaking balance issues (french on water maps, spearmen not doing any-cavalry damage). Unit animations are awkward and the color scheme is painful. The most egregious problems are that there are essentially 3 versions of the game:
1. Campaign - Uses old unit balancing and tech trees. Things just behave weirdly. Enemy AI doesn't exist and it's all fake scripted events.
2. Single player v ai - AI is borderline retarded
3. Multiplayer - nonstop sweats with cheese strats for days or chinese who just blatantly map-hack

>Do you think longboats will be packable to move them across land?
no
I imagine that'd be a nightmare to get working properly, you'd have to change the pack/unpacking code so the unit can only pack/unpack at a coast tile and then after pack/unpacking it must also teleport a tile over to the land/water
I assume the packed longboat is a scenario thing, like a unit you have to escort across hostile terrain to reach another river and sail away

I still think devs should give longships the ability to transport units since that was their main role, but I doubt they'll do that because it would upset the balance autists who never play water maps
>>
>>2468920
It's not about "meta", it's legitimately not knowing wtf you're even facing. You literally proved my point, you're not allowed to be a casul in this game. The units used to be pretty intuitive but they keep adding meme gimmicky units and at a faster pace. Even Liereyy didn't want to fucking bother with the south american non-civs. A literal pro can't be fucking bothered.
>>
>>2469062
>You literally proved my point, you're not allowed to be a casul in this game.
That is 100% correct, you are not allowed to be a casual while playing competitive modes. If you are a casual then you shouldn't care about winning or meta. Make up your mind. You can't be both casual and buttmad about losing.

>and they both still play the shit cashgrab civs anyway so wtf am i supposed to play?
if you are a casual then it shouldn't bother you
>and for the record I dont lose everygame against these civs, i hate playing against them even when i win
then your problem has nothing to do with the game being casual or sweaty. The only way for you to stop playing against new meme civs is to play custom lobbies where people pick other civs or play against AI and set the AI to other civs. There is no other way. Change sucks.

The kelloggs one is literally AoE1 without RoR which is an insane promo for a relatively newish game (it was already considered ancient by then because that's how fast that time moved).
Though for me, the original AoE1 demo were my favourite campaign levels. They were just 3 solid levels.
AoE1 is still king for me.
AoE2 is good, but misses that antiquity feel and vibes. Always went back to it. The AoE2 version FUCKING SUCKS FIX IT. FFS.
Missing campaigns, has bugs, barely functions. It already had AoE1 DE and that was already buggy (the ships went over land all the time).
But for me, the original AoE1 is still king.
The AoE3 games were open only twice I think. They were that shit. So disappointed. Can't believe they bothered with 3 again.
AoE4 was much much better.
I'm glad Mythology is finally getting some respect though. It needs a few more civs. South east asia, polynesia, africa and south america. Even Australia has cool myths. It doesn't have to be about civilisation really. Just the myths so you can kinda pretend abos weren't still living in sticks.

Chronicles is kinda fucked up, but I kinda really like it too. It's just unfinished and kinda empty right now. A husk.
I just wish the AoE2DE and chronicles AI was proper and could function with a proper economy. I'd like trained models actually. That would be perfect for it.
>defeating your ghost

Shieldmaidens disagree.
But they are kinda more myth than reality. History channel went super pants on head retarded with them in Vikings. That's when I stopped watching. Sigh. It had so much potential.

It needed to be more brutal and realistic to women. Medieval pagan women were treated almost like furniture. This feels like whitewashing history and is kinda ironically offensive to female struggles.
And by struggles, I mean their struggle to make a decent fucking sandwich for their masters, men.

I like how cheaters on forums are complaining about new patches breaking their exploits. I take it there was a massive amount of security hardening or something? Kinda pointless (it's only a matter of time) but it did end up REALLY FUCKING up pathing in games.
T90 was getting issues with crashes mid-late game too I think because of the changes. It's notoriously bugged with "turns" between players online and I think it's done something there. I can kinda see how something like that could impact pathing maybe too.

Or maybe they're finally attempting to expand the unit limit past 60 and just tweaked pathing already in anticipation?
Anyway, I blame nili. Because that's funny.

>cheat forums were kinda shocked how good the security was, so maybe the dev is another high elo tourney player that knows exploits

Do you play the game? I wish it were getting respect, but it seems they just let go everyone that was working on patches and left the game with pathfinding the worst it's ever been. Somehow whenever they fixed it, they managed to break it again with the next patch. Also Aztecs aren't really properly balanced, but the guy from the balance team that communicated was let go.
The number of civs is good as it is though, since the differences are a lot bigger than in other aoe games and adding too much will just raise the barrier of entry to the sky.

Actually it's the opposite, irl at least. It's a slow spanning system - you have to crank the crap out of it back and forth, but it doesn't take much strength and delivers brutal draw weights.

>>
>>2477981
Well, the device itself was high-tier, expensive, maintenance-heavy and hard to repair. Certainly not standard issue anyone could get.
>>
>>2477710
I went from finding moderate AI somewhat challenging and getting curb stomped by hard AI to comfortably beating Hardest in about 7 days of playing and learning about the game. What helped was setting up and using hotkeys, practicing one build order and learning about feudal rushes and how to counter them. Have you also tried doing the art of war campaign? That helped as well.
>I'm almost 30 I don't have the APM required for this,
Low ELO players have eAPM of around 12, you'll be fine.

Kamandaran is kinda meant to be researched when gold on the map starts to run out. Trashbows are a great support unit, but since Persians lack both Arb & Bracer and the correct architecture style, you're not supposed to use Trashbows as your main fighting force.
Elephants are fun, but as you get better you'll find that Knights are superior. Elephants shine on closed maps like Arena where you have time to boom and get the eco needed to maintain them, but on Arabia, Knights win because of how crucial speed is.
>>

Decided to play Turks because I want to play a Gun Civ.
Forgot Handcannons are weak to Ranged, and they built almost all ranged so my Jannisary Deathball got raped, and I had just built a bunch of Handcannons.
So I bolster them with Skirms to help even things out, only to see they're doing a relic victory, so I managed to run my ass over fast enough to get to the Monestary in the back, and luckily I pre-planned and snuck around, because I didn't even notice they had a wall.
Got in before they finished it, and as I was taking their Monastery they raided me with horses, luckily I had spearmen saved.
Unluckily, Turks have no spear upgrades.
So I started a Wonder, had all the people working on it die, and then had to move it and protect it with Bombard towers.
That was taking forever so I just ran my unwashed masses into their base with Sappers.
Eventually I got bored of waiting and just let the AI resign.
Somehow I feel like playing the Spanish with Supremacy Vills would be more effective than the Turkish.

I thought he had to piss or something and told him he could pause, but he said "no give me more time I'm not done building my town." I have no idea what happened with my Age timings.
I swear I got Castle and Imperial way sooner than that.
Motherfuckers took my 5th Relic too.
We both had 4 so neither of us could win the game.

Saxons are going to be like the Romans by stalling in Castle as their big stone reserves get spent trying to keep their castles up and fall off in Imperial as they lose the tech advantage.

Any math-wiz here? What's the viability of Saxons trading wood for stone by making mills late game? Assume the alternative option is selling wood for gold for stone, and that market prices are fucked

>Saxons are going to be like the Romans
So they're gonna top the WR rankings?

In Imp they have the Goth, Maya, and Byzantine unit discounts all combined, with FU arbs, extra tanky infantry, yasama towers, and infinite stone. They're guaranteed to win basically every grindy game.

They get 10 stone for 100 wood by building mills. So 1000 wood for 100 stone. They have guilds, so they can sell 100 wood for 17 gold at the market. 1000 wood gives 170 gold. Once the price of stone hits 170 gold per 100, building mills becomes more efficient. To reach that price, the players have to buy 900 stone total. That's less than two castles total, or about 7 towers, which the Saxons are encouraged to build a fuckton of.

So yes it will be very viable in the late game.
