How did you develop an attention span to play strategy games that are more involved? I got the steel division games and I really love them, best strategy games ive played in a long time, but I have this horrible habit of hyperfocusing on one area of the map for too long. I do it every time. I'll try to put together a flank push but now the town I'm holding is getting attacked, now I completely mindwipe the flank like I just got hit by one of those men in black mind erasers. It gets pushed in and I lose. I get hyperfocused on whatever I'm doing and forget to check the map constantly.

I feel so ADHD playing games like this and I wanna actually get good at strategy games. Do you have any tricks or ways you deal with this?

hyperfocusing on one thing is solved with either game experience or taking it slow. scaling it down can help getting experience without this getting in the way, don't know how viable that is in this game. in demanding games i consciously try to make habit to go back and forth between the focus and the other parts, the latter in a circle -- focus, detail 1, focus, detail 2, focus, and so on, going back to the first when i'm through them all. learned this in eve.

for long games, i have an issue where i can't ever resume a game in progress or i lose all interest. i have to do single session, preferably with 15-30 minute pauses, or i just feel too detached from it and would prefer to start over.

all RTS games require some micro skills so you'll just have to git gud

that being said, if you can get a good grasp on the number and location of the enemy's units then it's easier to parce which locations you need to keep an eye on and which locations you can afford to forget about for a bit. A waterproof frontline helps with this
Taking the initiative also helps (an enemy that is always defending is never attacking)

Try training your multitasking ability on time management games like Papa's Pizzeria or Jacksmith.

Look at minimap
Rotate through your unit group
Spread small unit into Recon and Guard duty outside the main line of defense.
You too should press units staged to attack to commit about the time enemy started theirs. If your mobile troops are close to enemy main push you can pinch those, otherwise you trade and hope you can head to their spawn quicker than they do. Not all trade is equal.
Don't mass too much on flank to the point that you can't pinch out the center push that directly win/lose the game. The shortest path between two opposing center of gravity should not be treated lightly.
