This thread is dedicated to the groundbreaking next-gen debut RTS from Frost Giant, who obtained $34.7 million dollars from external investors to create and release StormGate, the true successor to StarCraft II.Now that the dust has settled, was it worth it?
another day another starcraft clone deadwhy do people keep pretending blizzfags begging for another starcraft II are anything other than a loud minority?
>>2466615nobody wants another starcraft II. It's just hacks like Tim Morten who keep repeating that phrase thinking if they do it 1000 times it will become reality (it never will)
STARCRAFT ISN"T FUNTHAT"S WHY NO ONE PLAYS IT
>>2466622Same goes for another anything. Compfags are already heavily invested into at least one RTS and don't need another, certainly not a cheap clone.
>no talking food faction>no one wants to play your gameGee, are we really surprised?
>>2466736>no talking food>no dinosaurs>but the protagonist is a butch lesbian and the story is just warcraft 3 in a marvel overwatch skin
>>2466723It's astounding how in the age of excess we have oceans of content to consume, and people start craving ingenuity and original thought. But the realities of jewish greed have eliminated all ingenuity and original thought from the industry. Pity.
>>2466615ZeroSpace is already at 4 factions? Cool. Not a fan of Starcraft-likes but last I saw both games ZeroSpace felt superior even with that AI-generated art on the storepage.>>2466825>the story is just warcraft 3 in a marvel overwatch skinTold super incompetently, last I checked (which was quite some time ago). That pre-alpha-alpha cinematic trailer with a thief girl taking woah artifact from deeemons was a nothingburger and then the story starts with a shitty flashback to how the heroine was a babby at the babby's first attempt of animating Doom demon invasion with nothing cool or engaging happening, just a couple of guys making drama for no reason before the world is beset by several very aggressive bats followed by some shitty-looking demon dude who oh no releases even more bats. The devs were in so much hurry to establish their own videogamic universe that they forgor to make the universe appealing. The only thing I'd give a faint praise for is that the overall design of the not-angles (what I saw of them anyway) was kind of cool and unique compared to literally Starcraft 2 Terrans (with Reaper from Overwatch) vs Diablo 3 WoW demons.
>>2466837>not-anglesyou mean "not-angels". they definitely WERE angles. half of them were triangles and rhomboids
>>2466826Selling vidya that look just like other vidya is a smart thing to do most of the time because players see a familiar thing and immediately know whether they'd like it or not, and they keep wanting more. Original ideas are always risky, especially when dealing with strategy gamers who have very rigid tastes and dislike 'reinventing the wheel'.It's just that this strategy doesn't work with competitive games, like there's no need to have two dozen Counter-Strike clones, and for a genre as niche as RTS, players especially want to stick to games with robust player numbers.
Reminds me of a discussion I had in a comment section one time. To simplify, when making voicelines for RTS units, you kind of have to choose between two options:A) make them flavorful/immersive by giving them 10 different voicelines for every action (move, attack, death)B) make the player feedback more clear by having less voicelines (this is also good for VA budget)There are also other gameplay concerns limiting sound design. WC3 Flying Machine has somewhat infamous death sound, if a mass swarm of them starts taking losses, there WILL be multiple "they came from... behind" playing on top of each other.Anyway to circle back to the point, my idea would've been to limit the variable (at least on the attack) responses to just three - with the twist being that they're selected purely by which of the three races the unit is fighting.Angel-on-angel: I don't know Stormgate lore, but it could be something laconic, seething at heretics, or lampshading that it's not lore accurate ("We workin' with these 'nids? -Catachan Devil, DOW2)Angel-on-human: "Forgive me, I bring salvation" (I'm guessing they might start massacring humans to prevent them from being turned/corrupted by demons)Angel-on-demon: "BURN HELLSPAWN"
>>2466995+1 upvoted! Enjoy the Reddit Gold, stranger!
>>2466615The fundamental issue is that they keep making these games as cash-in on RTS legacy but never making them better than those lagacy games. Im not even talking about dumbing down because people would up any shit if has a cinematic appeal. The issue is that these idiots are making chinese knockoffs and then go and present them as the next Star Wars. It a mix of investmet scamming + creative bankruptcy + lack of talent/skill.
>>2466837both looked identical to starcraftthese screenshots are from their steam store pages, you know the images that are supposed to make you want to buy a gameI honestly can't tell you which is stormgate and which is zerospace and the last thing I want is to give either of these creatively bankrupt studios my moneysimple as that
>>2467118Listening to the recent Chris Taylor interview made me realize there's a huge split between how games were made before the financial crisis and after. In the past the publishers were a lot more loose with money. Now you have to make the most boring game ever because investors are so fucking risk averse.
>>2467801Gotta agree that these screenshots look identical to anyone just checking the games. But the early videos of gameplay did emphasize that ZeroSpace's zergs/insects are like an elf/druid faction IN SPACE with all that vegetation and turning map into green meadows and forests with flowers. And the idea of multiple mercenary subfactions with their own styles that the player can choose between to buff his primary faction's roster is definitely not typical for Starcraft or its clones, as is technology/faction skill trees. Maybe SC2 campaign had something like skill trees but I mean in a single match, though I am not sure if those skill trees in Zero are fully unlockable or if you can buy all the upgrades if you have enough currency used (thus making it identical to tech/buffs you get in buildings in other RTS, just using a different pop up window for that).
>>2467801bottom screenshot looks significantly better though
>>2467801Haven't played either of them but the top one looks like slop and plastic toys. I've heard this was an issue with stormgate but I'm assuming here...
>>2467801Nah man, you are blind if you can't see the difference. SG has that stupid fucking fisher price toddler toy finish on everything besides the colors, bottom screenshot looks closer to CnC3
>>2466994>Original ideas are always riskyYes, risky is a codeword for the jewish greed factor. Progress comes with risk. Underneath the fear, growth is hidden. Stagnation is safe, boring, and nobody wants it, not even jews. Jews want profit, yet they want safe profit, without the risk of losing. And in their risk-less approach, they lose more than ever. For being so influential and wealthy, they really aren't as shrewd as their reputation claims.
>delivers a game that's not only shitty, but also half-finished to the market and dies>but muh starcraftIt has nothing to do with Starcraft.
I feel like if people have enough spare money to give 34.7 million dollars towards something they hate, then I should receive a substantial passive income to support my NEET life style. I can also make things you will hate. For instance, this post.
>>2469977No, it really is>muh stracraftThe entire project hinged on pulling SCfags away from SC, especially the e-sports obsession and paying SC streamers to play this trash. Except nobody wants to play a fucking bootleg SC when the OG still exists and doesn't really lack anything. It's like trying to make Chess 2 for fuck's sake.Even if it was properly finished it would flop all the same, it had zero appeal for anyone except SC2 fans.
>>2469977I see you have conveniently memoryholed (((((Tim Morten's))))) multiple public claims that Stormgate is designed to repeat the commercial success of Starcraft II.
>>2470003It's not "people" but companies like Tencent. And they didn't receive it because they were NEETs, they received it because they managed to pull a long con grift that will be written about in the industry's history books.
>>2470029>>2470061Oh, look at that point flying over all these heads!
>>2470132>I was only pretending to be retarded! Now back to r/gaming with (You)
>>2470132What is even the point you were trying to make? That the existence of StarCraft had absolutely no effect on StormGate's performance? If you truly think that, then you are an utter and complete blind and deaf moron
>>2470135You are projecting, of course. Most people don't really care much about their marketing strategy or how they "frame" the product. They download the game, see that it's unfinished garbo and move on. All there is to it. All that matter in the end. I know there 100 stupid as fuck narratives floating around in this circle-jerk of a board, but then a game like TAB does just fine and destroys them all by existing.
>>2466589>groundbreakingNASA call that "lithobraking", to be precise.
>>2470145>You are projecting, of course.>Most people don't really care
>>2470178Groundbreaking is breaking the groundLithobraking is breaking your expensive spacecraft
>>2470203Yes.And which one is Stormgate currently doing?
>>2470208more than you, lmao
>>2466589>let's just create Starcraft II with 1/10th of the budget in 1/6th of the time.>>2466615All I want is a game that plays similarly to Brood War or Warcraft 3 with designs that aren't devoid of creativity.
