I'll like to find out how many JP strategy games are there, so I'll dump covers in this thread.

I'll start with the oldest and most recognizable franchise from Koei.

This series, alongside with Nobunaga's Ambition, is the oldest and the only strategy game franchise that's still alive today.

It's gameplay varies from each game but it's usually divided into two different systems, a ruler-based strategy game where you play as a warlord and conquer all of China or a character-based system where you play as a character and be able to either work as a lowly officer under a ruler or become a ruler yourself.

Right now I'm just waffling between an Oda and a Takeda start, I lost my Ryuzoji(?) run earlier so I'm bummed about starting out in Kyushu or such atm.

Is that considered the best Nobunaga's Ambition game?

either this or Awakening depending on if you prefer miromanaging everything or roleplaying as a ruler/being more hands off.

Yes, along with Awakening.

Main difference between the two is the strategical approach. Sphere of Influence has a more developed system of construction and specialization for castles and provinces.

Awakening plays more like a feudal personnel management game, where you lent most of the control to the AI (it's competent); easier to play if you haven't played Nobunaga before.

Nevertheless, KOEI likes to reinvent the wheel after every game and modern titles can lack features from previous ones, for example, Awakening doesn't has coalitions (SOI does).

Not him but there's like 5 of them and various versions like I think some handheld for 5 has more stuff but lacks voice acting over its older PS2 release.

Specifically, the translated one is Menace of Axis V, the fifth game of the series

Sengoku Rance
A-Train series is still alive
you'd think with all the niggas-on-a-grid tactics that came out of japan they'd put out some more strategy
