Where is the general for games that have no general
you didn't tell me how much fun this game is
>>2468959Just make a thread for the game you want? Despite appearances, this isn't /vstg/ just /vst/
>>2468990I'm currently playing through various rtsImpossible Creatures, Castle Combat, Be Queen Be, Creeper World. Most of these would die without replies
>>2468976I tried CW4, but after playing Infested Planet a whole lot I didn't find it particularly stimulating. I'm cautiously curious about Calyx.
this mission was a bit of a bitch. No clue what the intended solution is>>2469076the demo is still up. My only issue with the demo missions was, that once you stabilize, the rest becomes cleanup.I guess this is true for most Creeper World scenarios as well.
>>2468959>Where is the general for games that have no generalIn /vg/ of course it's /civ4xg/
>>2469457>you have to make a multi game/multi genre general to survive on the gacha schizos boardsad to see it
>>2468976Weird lore of the game, but kind of interesting.
>>2468959Surprisingly liking Zero-K a lot despite not being a fan of the "there are no factions, you can build whatever you want/need" idea, but the game makes it work. Also enjoying its excuse of an sp campaign though other players spoiled that it has no satisfying ending, which is a shame. Started playing it after being tempo banned on BAR again. No Majesty and Brutal Legend in the picture, SAD!Also>some like them, some hate>Supreme Commander 2Does this one really have any sort of a fanbase? I thought it was largely regarded as a very disappointing sequel.>>2469474>sad to see itPeople used to be forced to post inane shit every hour if they wanted their slower thread to stay on veegee. Now it's like 4+ hours to be in danger. Still can't compare to their purity of the months-long discourses of /vst/, of course.
>>2469571Most agree it had cool experimentals and even the tech tree had some potential. I heard it has a small community going for a while with tournaments and everything, never paid it much attention though.
>>2469605Huh, interesting.
>>2469081yeah of course once you're stable it's just cleanup. otherwise you haven't actually stabilized.
I finally have an idea how to marry RTS and grand strategy genres. And it's really simple.Imagine a game like AoE, but with one tiny major twist: a messenger unit. You build a base, you control your armies, you can micromanage everything you want. But a building starts being built and an army starts marching only when a messenger arrives.Consequence: your direct expansion is naturally limited, so you'd want to expand indirectly. In a situation when you can completely destroy an opponent, you might instead offer them to become your vassal. Tax contribution, levies, trade redirection etc are tools on top on the good old RTS gameplay.I'm going to vibe code this shit and present a demo whenever I'll find a moment.
So I just finished 1 after 3. I think mechanically its better than 3 as your whole toolkit is useful and less spammy. I feel like if I played 1 first 3 would've been a bit of a disappointment and I didn't even play 2 yet. 3 has higher highs and a far better final boss though.
Original War deserves more recognition. This weekend in a bout of nostalgia, I decided to replay this game to see if it holds up. And then I spent the whole Saturday fucking around with skirmish in Sands of Siberia. This game fucks.
>>2468976I am surprised that Creeper World is rarely talked about here.Cool soundtrack.
>>2469081>2d perimeterhuh
Why are there seemingly so fucking few native English speakers in the Warzone 2100 community and how are they getting bullied into silence by esl russians?Thankfully though these retards haven't been able to ruin the game's development though, The head devs or whatever have brains and taste.
>>2469457True, come visit.
>>2473886>Perimeterprobably not except they have both terraforming. I think the original Creeper World is a flash game that might be as old as Perimeter and likely inspired by Liquid Wars.I only played Perimeter once even though I still have a phyiscal copy of it. Probably got it from a bargain bin.
what are some cool autistic fan RTSs? I'm big on playing settings I like in TTRPGs, lately have been getting into RTSs, and curious what's out there. So far found Reign of Nether (picrel), Lambda Wars, and a DOOM mod for AoEII. Anything else?
>>2478383picrel2
>>2468976>>2469081fun for the first 10 hours, then you realise it's always the same shit: defend up to a certain point, then you've already won. half of my gameplay time is simply speeding up waiting for the win.gets boring quickly. unfortunate, because the idea was really good and i loved it ages ago
>>2469457No one ever talks about RTS in there.
>>2468959Yeah nothing has changed since 2007. Still the best genre ever though.>>2478541That’s any rts though, aoe especially.
>>2482278>That’s any rts though, aoe especially. In AoE people sometimes win thought sneaky tactics, or well-micro'd trebuchets, or water advantage, or whatever. Not every match is about winning though eco.
What about CTA Gates Of Hell : Ostfront? That game rocks.
>>2483052he probably meant campaign because I agree on that sentiment. It's especially bad in games that have scripted continuation, like in one of the first Supreme Commander missions the map increases after finishing off the enemy and next a monkeylord walks towards your base (you don't know that in advance). You can just boom eternally and build a thousand gunships or get punished for being quick.I think Battleforge dealt with this very well, as almost all levels operate on a timer in some way. Either you get overrun, have to keep something alive or hold a position >>2478541The one mission in Creeper World 3>>2469081is a perfect counter example because you operate on a time limit
beat my first RTS (and strategy in general) campaign today. Yes, I discovered how broken water elementals are on the next-to-last mission, and drowned the orcs in a tide of them. On one hand, it felt very anti-climatic, on the other, it's not like I abused some niche combo of mechanics, so fuck em. I'm probably gonna move onto Warcraft 2 instead of redoing these missions without the elementals anyway
>>2491195brother why are you playing warcraft 1 as your first RTS
>>2491195Why the fuck would you ever play Warcraft 1 as your first RTS and strategy game?Maybe the marketing departments were right with restarting the numbering of long-running titles after every few titles.
>>2491384>>2491459I have tried a few (more modern) turn-based games before, but never got far. As for why Warcraft 1:a) figured it'd be a decent place to start learning RTS mechanics and logic, as when it came out, almost no-one has played an RTSb) wanted to get the full in-universe progression if I was to continue onto other Warcraft gamesc) I've been already enjoying retro games as of late, and I believe you can always get at least something out of them if you don't skip them, so why notI'm not really planning to do the same with AoE or AoM, but I had fun here.
>>2491514>hmm I want to get into movies>I should start with The Great Train Robbery (1903)
>>2491523I mean, why not? Obviously you're not going to watch everything released since then, but there's joy in seeing progress and innovations be made. Not to mention fundamentals modern times might have forgotten.
>>2491524An appreciation for the history of RTS and its advancements is unlikely to be appreciated by someone playing their first RTS. There's no baseline.
>>2491514>I'm not really planning to do the same with AoEThe funny thing is that AoE is a decently playable predecessor of AoE2, while WC1 and 2 are almost incomparable.
>>2491514When it comes to AoE you have modern supported versions of the entire series so there's that. You really should have played AoE2 DE and it would have still been a "classic" RTS (and it's not like there are that many modern RTS in general anyway) that aged much better. Or I dunno C&C.Warcraft is a weird pick, especially since blizzard is dead set on raping the lore anyway so it's not like the RTS games even mean all that much in the context of WoW anymore.>>2491524>>2491530When it comes to media I believe you should start with something more contemporary and work back from there to see how you got there, I suppose sort of opposite of what lit class usually does. Games have the issue though in that their history is relatively short and it changed a lot during that time so going back to old games can be pretty difficult to stomach at times.Like I know people complain about games getting dumbed down but even 20 or 30 year old games have alien crab controls and shitload of tedious busywork I find it impossible to get back to.
>>2491523get away with that new age shit, he should start with theatre and then work himself up to puppets>>2491514>I'm not doing the same with AoE, AoMyou can't because they don't have a shared universe unless you count 'loosely based on history' as a continuous setting. Also AoM only has 1 game. Also what the other anon said. Trying to get into a genre by starting from an old entry may sound applaudable, but it also sounds like you try to force yourself to enjoy it. That being said, C&C1 would've been a better entry point
Is there any truly team based RTS? Like where the core game mode is 2v2 or 3v3? I feel like lack of social aspect is the main reason RTS lost its multiplayer audience to MOBAs(the singleplayer audience never left. well maybe some left to play factorio)
>>2492933You has something like world in conflict. MP is very much team based and weirdly drop in/out Though it was kinda mobaish already with very few units a lot of reliance on activated abilities.Eugen games (wargame/no, SD) are predominately played as team games to the extent I think it's fair to say it's a core experience of the game, though there is a 1v1 scene. Sort of descended from both examples is Broken Arrow, a true team game where the only game mode is 5v5 and the game is designed around that.Other than that I dunno. AoE is designed around team play to some extent, civs have team bonuses after all, most casuals play it like that and even on pro level there are occasionally team based events. BAR is crab bucket lobbies all day every day.
>>2491523>watching his second movie Boss Baby>getting a lot of train robbery vibes from this>>2492933yes, Battleforge. Unless you are talking about pvp, then you are better of with something like wargame, Coh.Every rts lets you play 4v4, but it will be much harder to find balanced matches
>get back into Rise of Nations>play Conquer the World daily>realise that half of the gameplay is dealing with where to put buildings when the space is so cramped because of unpassable uncuttable trees and giant unpassable metal mountains>some maps are literally "deal with this maze of trees that doesn't leave much room for building anything"I'm tired of this cramped space bullshit, it's basically the opposite of real life. Same with Warcraft I which is still the best Warcraft game.
