Austerlitz campaign, we finally spot the Austrian army headed towards the river crossing, the bridgehead must hold until the arrival of our infantry.

The enemy rushed for the crossing without scouting, confiding he wouldn't find us there, and his marching column appears in front of our light cavalry. There's only one thing to do that can buy us time: a bold Hussar charge.

The bold French "hussards" plunge into the enemy ranks causing mayhem, many fall under the Austrian musketry but their sabres reap many more; the enemy forward elements flee and disappear into the marshes. The bridgehead holds, for now. Our infantry had better be here soon.

"Any hussar who isn't dead by the age of thirty is a scoundrel."
-General Antoine Charles Louis de Lasalle

Man they're really scamming people by selling each game for $40.
Is there some kind of a decent place where you can pirate them?
>>
>$40 for a game authored by 10 minutes of claude prompting
no thanks
>>
40 bucks for a hex based wargame that looks like the ones I played in the 90s? No thanks.

40 fockin poundering maight? No way

not me, some tard is trying to be funny

I'm genuinely interested in WDS games but they are way overpriced
I just checked their page and their whole series of Napoleonic Battles is like $500, come on
In general wargames, not only WDS ones, are priced like a pure scam to milk money from old farts and some military people which is a shame
>>
>>2481822
but anon, you're paying for all of the research that went into making this historical recreation
>>
>>2481820
Infantry is here.
The voltigeurs spread out and secure a perimeter while line infantry marches through the bridge
Cavalry losses were staggering but the bridgehead is in our hands and we can begin the offensive across the Isar.

>>2481822
I feel like the price is mostly good for the amount of detail these games carry, luckily and unluckily are niche games, that means they scratch an itch which is, at the same time, a very peculiar itch to scratch; I assume they don't sell huge numbers. With that said they normally put one game per week on sale and they often have broader sales too. Wait for one you like to go on sale and grab it at a discount, they're really good games.

The games can be found cracked on the usual russian forum, if you don't know or can't find it, you're probably too retarded to enjoy the games. There is a guy who is very diligent in uploading the latest games. You just crack them and then download the updates if they need them directly from their website. As for if they are overpriced, it depends. If you and a friend who genuinely interested in the campaign, battle or theatre depicted in the game, absolutely. There is a wealth of content, a usually interesting book of sources and design choices, and just an interesting tool to view major historical battles/campaigns. If you are alone its a bit trickier. The Napoleonic and Civil war series have awful AI. You are better off playing against yourself. The Panzer/WW1/Modern Campaigns and the newer Musket era and Medieval era ones have decent if not a bit bland AI. The latest Panzer ones are worth playing around with. My fave is the Spring Awakening one. It also has a Konrad campaign included. The AI is pretty good in that one. The AI is a lot better defensively, so pick a campaign in which you play as the agressors. Ie. don't pick Normandy if you want to play the Germans, don't pick the Bulge if you want the Americans and don't pick the Pacific games if you want the Japanese. That being said, the games often include smaller scenarios in which you can play as them on the offensive, but they aren't the full campaigns you probably bought/pirated the game for.

They got wargames on pornolab? That's pretty cool
>>

I'm enjoying this game quite a lot OP, thanks for opening my eyes to it.
>>
>>2484766
You're very much welcome, which game did you get?

Also that battle is turning into a bloody mess of charges and countercharges.
>>
>>2485221
Just the demo right now, I'm considering which one I want to play first. I didn't see the Italian campaign anywhere so I think the earliest in the timeline would be Campaign Marengo.
>>
>>2485618
Yes, Campaign Marengo includes the 1796 campaign, the Austro-Russian 1799 campaign and the 1800 Marengo campaign.

Napoleonwise that's the earliest in the timeline, otherwise there's also Republican Bayonets on the Rhine which focuses on the many battles along the Rhine and in Germany between 1792 and 1800 but you're not going to see Napoleon there.
>>
>>2481629
Used to play the Napoleonics in PBEM but once I understood the meta the game became extremely frustrating. The insane reliance on melee over firing, people not wanting to play phases so defensive fire is a total crapshoot of you either take 90% casualties or 0, and, of course, the detachable skirmishers.
Skirmishers alone absolutely, single-handedly destroyed any desire to ever play this again multiplayer.
Recommend pike & shot series though, solved most of the issues I had.
>>
>>2487367
Would you say that defensive phases make the game more realistic? I honestly never tried to play it with that on.

That aside I think some degree of house rules and mutual understanding has to be adopted if you want to achieve realism. That's how I like to play my games generally.
>>
>>2481629
I used to play quatre bras and waterloo as a kid, good fucking times. Had lovely little 2 second .avi clips from the movie during appropriate events.
>>
>muh $40
$30 on sale
Each game comes with around 60-100 scenarios and usually campaigns.
Best bang for your buck in wargaming
>>
>>2487859
Yes, I much prefer phase play. They included recently (like 2~ years ago) the ACW "auto defensive fire" optional rule, so phases are now only 1 file transfer per turn, same as turns.
There's literally no reason not to play phases as they're better in every way.

>>2487944
good for them for having such loyal paypigs

How do you deal with units running away all the time? Playing the early missions of Marengo and you got no cavalry to chase them down, and the terrain is awful. The forest becomes full of enemy brigades who just wait to counter-attack, and I can't really shatter them.
Feel like I'm playing whackamole constantly.
>>
>>2488119
NTA but these games are so miniscule that every little bit helps them make the next. It's not a big corp, it's just a handful of very passionate guys. Also for autistic wargames fairly reasonable price desu, i've seen these kind of specialist games go for $80+ looking at you slitherine games
Anyway just pirate it and buy it on a sale if you like it, that's what I did
>>
>>2488009
Hmm, although with manual defensive fire phases, undesirable shenanigans could happen like entire units being able to march into a defile in front of your line without you getting any opportunity fire against them. Isn't that the case?
>>
>>2488476
If they march in front of your line they get caught by zoc and are forcefully stopped. Defensive fire phase happens after movement phase.
If you mean they can technically march a single unit passed your line and into a hiding spot, then yes it's possible. Though I would question the efficacy of a single unit, isolated and alone, hidden in a little ditch. Every single troop of yours that can fire, will take one defensive reaction shot at full power against the best target they can (most damage)
On the plus side, every single unit that can make a defensive shot, will take one at full power. If you march columns forward to attack an enemy line, the line will take one shot when they're at point-blank range, but they won't take a reaction shot for every single movement (3 hexes, 2 hexes, 1 hex, rotate, initiate melee) so it's more predictable, and in my experience far more realistic and better, than the utter randomness of turn play.

Try it against AI for a turn and see what you think. Though you have to manually do the defensive fire, as ADF doesn't work vs AI.

>>2488119
What wargames do you play that cost less and have the same level of detail and QC?
>>
>>2488668
I refer you to >>2481822
I do play videogames that cost $30, have superior graphics, superior UI, superior UX and superior AI apparently since some other anons said that AI in WDS games is piss poor. And I spend literally over 1k hours in them.
And here I'm paying basically for some scenarios and nothing else since the game engine and the systems are the same throughout the games.

So what, a bunch of guys sitting in the editor and making 60 scenarios is worth a price of a full new indie game? With how much work put in? Some of you just can't see the big picture.

>I do play videogames that cost $30, have superior graphics, superior UI, superior UX and superior AI
Did you think we wouldn't notice your failing to name a single example, as >>2488668
asked you to? NTA, by the way, so I don't have a horse in that race, but still, I couldn't help but notice.
>>
>>2481629
Very cool anon, can you show the jump maps so we have a bit of an idea how the forces are spread out?

I once tried to make a webm of jump maps from each turn to show the progress of a battle, it was Panzer Campaigns though and the night turns really screwed up the visualisation unfortunately. Also it was mega ass to remember to do this every turn.

>>2489111
>I do play videogames that cost $30, have superior graphics, superior UI, superior UX and superior AI
I'm intrigued, name them
>>
>>2489178
Did you notice the linked post where I said that most wargames are overpriced? Genuinely asking did you notice that?
Is it a problem with 4chan's UI? Is it a reading problem? What happened there?
>>
>>2489179
It's been a rather bad game, he's now overrunning my flank and I'm trying to save as many as possible and get on the other side of the river. He blocked my path on the only other bridge in the map too, my idea was to cross it and maneuvre behind his army, didn't succeed. Sadly this specific Austerlitz scenario gives a huge advantage to the Coalition player before the French player can decide anything. The objectives want me to storm the map and wipe out his army, but it becomes impossible if he simply retreats on the other side of the major river, which he can easily do before my armies reach him.
It's going to be a very difficult 1805 campaign, we also just butterflied away Austerlitz.
>>
>>2489605
If I recall correctly you can ford or make a pontoon crossing. Has been while since I looked over the rules though and that may have been for a different title
>>
>>2489895
You actually cannot make pontoon bridges as far as I'm aware. You can ford if there are fords but there aren't any on this map, it's a major multi-hex river. We're kinda screwed ggwp
