Strategy games seem like they have fallen into either "grand strategy" games which I'm not interested in or endless civ clones. Sad really but are there any out in the last year or coming up that are any good? Really want scifi but will take others
>>2489807Moo1>Moo2God, 2 has so much bloat in retrospect
>>2489810>bloati dont think u know what bloat is
>>2489807Endless Legend 2 comes out of Early access tomorrow, it is asymmetric 4x without space warfare. If you don't mind a little older then there is age of wonders planetfall which is also an asymmetric 4x like Endless Legend 2 but units are very customisable and it has good combat but worse economy. The first Endless Legend is also good and has had a lot of time to bake.Starsector is like mountain blade in space
>>2490138I tried el2 and the combat was a drag, same with planetfall, it was like XCOM but with 30 units and if you don't read each ability you get raped by poison across the map
>>2489825>i dont think u know what bloat isWe don't think you know what it means.
>>2490144The problem with planetfall is you can bring so many squads into a battle, it can get tedious if you aren't insta resolving. EL2 at least caps you at 2 squads, but you need free units or to get lucky with summon items on your hero to take a lot of early fights
>>2489810fpwpgo play with your sliders
>>2490154I wanted to like it, the over world was cool and factions. But combat was far too do or do esp with randoms for how trivial it should be
>>2489810Moo2 had multiplayer so I could hotseat with my brothers growing up (in the 2000s, because our dad was awesome). But yeah even then it was obvious Moo1 was superior in all but multiplayer. Little brother would always design a super-expensive ship, call it the "Dead Dragon", build it slowly for a zillion years, and then win the game when it finished.Pretty metal name for a 10 year old.
>"superior" game nobody gives a fuck about while MoO2 spawned countless of copy cats and to this day is regarded as one of the best space 4XNot sure if its one retarded samefag or this board has multiple deluded moo1 fanboys who love their simplistic game with solved gameplay loop.
>>2491109Contrarianism
>>2491109Look brother we're here to talk about how the game plays, I don't care how many people copied it. You bring up simplistic? MOO2 didn't make the game more complex, it just introduced more mechanics with low decision weight. Economy. Despite the vast number of buildings, every build order in MOO2 is the same; except you still need to manually key in the 100 buildings multiplied by however many dozens of planets you end up controlling. The leader system is also ridiculously broken. MOO1 sliders are an elegant solution to allocating resources because the net effect is the same while reducing busywork. Tech, MOO2 has the same tech tree each time, and going Creative to get all techs is a common strong choice. In MOO1, each race has a randomly generated subset of technologiesCombat, I know tactical battles in MOO2 are fun at first when it's a handful of ships on either side. This quickly spirals out of control when you get into lategame with dozens or more either side. MOO2 does have more tactical depth, but it doesn't scale well. MOO2 is copied because it has a lot of mechanics, looks great, custom races are fun to make, and is more accessible. But they added mechanics at a rate that outpaced meaningful defisions. MOO1 is appreciated in retrospect because of its cleaner design.
>>2491322Seconding this.>>2491109>>2491235MoO2 is much less enjoyable due to all the bloat. Manually ordering dozens of ships is cancer.
>>2491602What does moo1 do that so much better?Srs never played itThere was choice though as far as defenses esp on a planet, and tech tree was great with tough choices
>>2491902>What does moo1 do that so much better?Elegance
I tried to beat antares using just missle frigates, but the game doesn't let you send more than 100 and anteres had some bullshit that blows up all your missles
>>2491109This. There is one angry poster here who is still butthurt about MOO2 and makes the same argument over and over again.I think that they were overwhelmed by choices
>>2491904same. i like sliders for my galatical overlording. also small ships were more useful in MOO1. mostly due to stacking. small ships in MOO2 are just b8/filler. in some ways MOO2's ship builder is even more limited than MOO1. > e.g. in MOO1 ,if you're far ahead in tech, it's viable to put on a colony on the smaller ships. you can even slap on higher tech-level lasers on them and scare away weaker aliens. no need to escort your colonies.
>>2493745>anteres had some bullshit that blows up all your misslesAFAIK missile spam works but you need higher level missiles to do any damage because they have absorption shields that work like shields, but you can't disable them like normal shields. trick is those not-shields don't block out troopers that can easily board their ships IF you can get close enough or have that special weapon that shoots out troop-pods.you should also be using your biggest ships. partly due to the ship limit.at most you would only use smaller ships for your commanders, because the AI usually tries to destroy the bigger ships with more weapons first. or use a few to do kamikaze runs.
>>2491322>custom races are fun to make, and is more accessible.custom wizards worked better in MOM than the custom races in MOO2. the 9 units per battle/tile limit makes the late-game battles not-tedious like in MOO2. but that unit limit means that late-game ,you need the strongest units/spells to win at anything. MOM has the same problem with MOO2, copying Civ's city building mechanics. i don't think they game-tested well enough.or the devs are actual autists who love meaningless micromanagement. the Civ games just don't work like MOM and MOO, which focus more on combat than actually building a Civ. not including Civ 5, which is practically a Panzer Blitz game.
>>2491235that sounds like you, samefag.
>>2493818Oh I have no problem beating them normally it was a challenge run.Mass missile frigates rock 95percent of game. They had some lighting field or something that outright kills 70 percent of missiles
>>2490138The Endless franchise is garbage.
>>2489807Well, taking your thumbnail as the theme>Master of Orion: Conquer the Starsthe 2016 remake is relatively decent and fun but not nearly as involved as the OGsthis leaves the Indies>Interstellar Space: Genesis >Stars in Shadowhonorable mention>Free Orionnever tried that, but of the Indies Genesis is the better and most faithful "remaster" of the OG.
>>2495558Played both sis and isg. Both fall flat by mid and end game.Isg esp for how quick you tech vs colonize or fight, you can be max tech before even a quarter of the galaxy is yours. Combat feels aloha stage still.Sis had potential but feels abandoned.Check out stardrive 2, it's really good
