I unironically enjoy Imperator. Vanilla, even. But as with most Paradox games now I don't know if I can really recommend it. It *is* barebones in terms of flavor, and if you're not into the almost idle game esque experience of empire building then I think you'll be left wanting.

That being said. It is fun to play as Judea, stack bonuses on Jerusalem, and make it an impregnable fortress while the Egyptians stand there not knowing what to do about it.

It's like a less ambitious but more finished eu5 if you played that game.
Pretty fun to sink some hours into it to create a super strong state before dropping it and never coming back.

I love Imperator. Best game Paradox has put out in the last 10 years, easily. And part of what makes it great is that they dropped it and didn't bloat it with DLC that ruined the game.
