Now that the dust has settled, is Mechabellum any good?
>>

Mobile tier slop:
Your 'strategy' depends more on what cards you draw (luck) and how leveled you are (grind). You're also severely restricted in what you can see and do. As a result the gameplay is mostly reactive and hoping you accurately predicted what will happen, in single player this goes out the window because they're pre-planned scenarios and it pulls the usual difficulty spikes of "you've been fighting nothing but ground units until now, here's a boss round with all air units, hope you remembered to bring AA units...".

Imagine chess:
Your start with a king and pawns, nothing else.
At the start of your turn you can either move a piece, pull a random piece out of the bag and place it on the back row, or 'swap' a pawn with a random piece in the bag. (Interesting)
You can't see what your opponent did on their (previous) turn until you've moved/pull/swap. (This is terrible design and kills strategy).

Not really. You can run the exact same setup multiple times and get different results because target selection is randomised for targets within their envelope (unless you equip an item/skill that overrides unit targetting behaviour)

Grind for what? Tech bits? All the units are playable with their standard loadout.
>>
>>2496027
>Grind for what? Tech bits?
Unit abilities are locked behind the grind. You also receive less and have less room in your 'warehouse' to store modifiers between games im the new mode.
>All the units are playable with their standard loadout.
Playable yes, but you're severly limited in what you can do. It's significantly harder to plan out strategies and synergys when two-thirds of shit is locked. The tutorial makes a point of highlighting the synergy between units and skills but then you realise all those combos are locked behind the grind.

It's basically a roll back to early days survival which randomised what units you could pick. It's the most rng dependant mode yet.

I went back and checked thinking bs and he's right, the tutorial literally tells you to do what a new player can't:
- Use the best partnr skill to spawn a marksmen - The ability is locked.
- Use the Shooter Squad skill to spawn some fangs - The ability is locked.
The loading hints are the same.
"Fire can ignite sticky oil bombs" - The ability is locked....

It wasn't even true, something is fucked in the current Epic Games version and it was trying and failing to install Fortnite for some reason without the option to disable it, and got caught in a loop of restarting and failing updates. Good thing you can just grab the game from the website anyway, I uninstalled that shit.
That doesn't make Steam not bloated though.

At first I thought this was bad luck, turns out it's intentional and the winning move is to avoid being in the lead so the AI curbstomps your opponenets for you in the final round.

I kind of appreciate why there are so many different units now, each one is a meaningfully different counterplay
>>
>>2495230
It's pretty great, but if you want to do 2v2s you better have a friend with opposable thumbs.
>>
>>2498286
I disagree. Once you factor in unit upgrades the number of roles is bloated and has too many overlaps.
This leads in to one of the big issues the game has, upgrades are applied to every unit whereas promotions are not. It's like the devs had no direction. Either:
1 - Upgrades and promotions are applied to all units of that type.
or
2 - Upgrades and promotions are applied to individual units.
Instead they opted for inconsistency.
>>
>>2499166
promotions are a huge part of specific strategies. if youll remember the gospel strat, level 2 rhinos with armor are quite fun. it actually wont work with level 1 rhinos with armor.
>>
>>2499166
Why should promotions be applied to all units? Units gaining veterancy is a long-time RTS feature, and upgrades are often entirely separate. Have you never played C&C or CoH?
>>
>>2499166
You realize promotions are based off unit exp which is based off their kills...right?
>>
>>2499263
>Units gaining veterancy is a long-time RTS feature, and upgrades are often entirely separate.
>Have you never played C&C or CoH?
Have you? It's been long established that you don't pay for unit veterency, it's a reward mechanic for using a unit effectively. If promotions were automatic and MB didn't charge you for them it wouldn't be an issue.
>>
>>2499619
Ahhh and now you're changing your complaint from its applicability to its cost, you're just looking for an argument
>>
>>2499687
All I did was point out that if the "long-time RTS feature" in MB functioned the same way as it did in the games you menitoned, it wouldn't be an issue.
I haven't changed my argument, I'm looking for consistency, you played yourself.
>>
>>2499619
higher leveled units also give more exp when they are killed, so you dont want to promote units that you know are just going to die (chaff)

why are you even in this thread, seriously? mechabellum has been out for a while and this has been a gameplay mechanic that literally no one really bats an eye toward except you. if you prefer other autobattlers then thats great, but if you dont know literally the most basic stuff in mechabellum after about a year or two of it being out then you are just literally wasting everyone's time arguing about non-issues
>>
>>2499696
It's being applied consistently, what changed is adding a cost and Endwar already did that 20 years ago. I'm not so reactionary that I'd clutch my pearls at a change from RTS convention.

The game's structure of deployment into repeated iterative real-time battles is a much more drastic change from convention
>>
>>2499712
>It's being applied consistently
Promotions and tech are not applied consistently, one is applied to every unit of that type, the other to individual units, both require the user to expend resources.

>>2499712
>Endwar already did that 20 years ago
Endwar was a flop.
>>
>>2499739
>Promotions and tech are not applied consistently
Brother, do you know what "consistent" means?
Techs are applied the same way in every instance
Promotions are applied the same way in every instance
Both are consistent, it was never a requirement or expectation for the two kinds of purchase to be identical

Might as well push your logic to its absurd conclusion to expose its stupidity that purchasing units is "not applied consistently" because it instantiates a unit rather than a stat/ability boost despite "requiring the user to expend resources.
>>
>>2499774
>Both are consistent, it was never a requirement or expectation for the two kinds of purchase to be identical
consistent =/= identical
Should also be noted that the impact of the inconsistency is multiplied because both are activated through the same window element. You click on a (single) unit and you have two choices, upgrade a single units in one way or upgrade all units in another. They should really be spread across different window elements.

>purchasing units is "not applied consistently" because it instantiates a unit rather than a stat/ability boost
From a design point it would make more sense to migrate the tech upgrades over to the unit recruitment card. That way the unit card deals with the individual unit (and equipment), and the recruitment card deals with all units of that type (or in the case of actually recruiting, recruit another unit (- of said type).
>>
what is this shit, window element, youre talking about UI now? lmao wasnt it about cost? people are really just saying anything to look like they know something

The game is all about seeing what meta your opponent is running and countering it with the opposite meta. There's no feeling of control because its all reaction based. Training mode is actually a better single player mode than the actual single player because it's not constantly randomising the opposing force. Free for all is a joke because the player controlles 'neutral team' does all the work and wrecks first place for you. 2v2 is almost as bad as BAR with people rage quitting because you don't follow a specific meta.
>>
>>2501354
>There's no feeling of control because its all reaction based.
Every competitive game is reacting to your opponent while advancing your own plan, there's plenty of control in that. I wouldn't know about FFA or 2v2 because I just do 1v1.
>>
>>2499961
I am in your walls
>>
>>2501354
I don't understand this kind of thinking because it actually goes both ways. ever think about how maybe you can do YOUR meta and then the opponent has to counter it
>>
>>2502133
Following a meta leads to stale gameplay, you're no longer playing against your opponent, you're following a safe pattern. It's a big flaw of all turn based games. Mechabellum tries to alleviate this by giving rewards between turns but only serves to remove player agency because they're being limited by what the rng grants them and they're either pushed in a given direction or left feeling dissapointed because rngesus denied them their toys. Following the meta is all good if you're obsessesion is your ranking because it's statistically going to give you the greatest gains, which, arguably and unfortuanetly, is how a lot of gamers judge their 'skill'.
>>
>>2502187
So what is this safe, unbreakable pattern that's being followed that makes the game stale? Counterplay doesn't necessarily mean stale
>>
>>2502187
everyone has their own way of playing (meta) and has favorite units.

some people favor the Mountain cheese while I dont think i'll ever do it.
some people swear by Scorpions but I dont use them at all in favor of other units.

whatever youre saying would be valid if the game didnt give you a ton of options that are not 1:1 similar and will diversify the meta even without the rng per round.

youre not telling me that if you get the Assault Marksmen card through rng youll pick it up, buy lots of marksmen and are guaranteed to win.
>>
>>2495241
>>2501354
>>2502187
>this game relies on you devising an effective strategy to counter an enemy's effective strategy of beating you
damn that's crazy, as opposed to what? rolling dice?
also the random cards are there to prevent there being a stale meta, you have to adapt to the hand you're given every match and improvise accordingly.

these kind of posts are so low iq and try to pass off as valid criticism by using buzzwords lol.
if the random cards weren't there you retards would be crying about how the game revolves around doing the same thing every match instead.

you have stated a premise without demonstrating why it is necessary
>>

because you're endlessly playing catch up from a losing position without any actual ability to turn things around, without the game pulling some deus ex machina equalizer
RTS games don't have this issue because resources and troops don't endlessly respawn
in general, shut the fuck up you stupid obnoxious nigger and preferably kill yourself
>>
>>2502913
>without any actual ability to turn things around
anyone who's played the game demonstrably sees how a winning board can turn into a losing one, just like your how argument has devolved into, well, that
>>
>>2502914
>anyone who's played the game demonstrably sees how a winning board can turn into a losing one
If that were true why does free-for-all feature an AI that is designed to target and curb-stomp the player currently in 1st place? Could it be that being in a first place grants a continuous advantage that results in snowballing?

1v1/2v2 has the virtue of health which shortens the matches when one team begins to gain a total advantage.
>>
this guy's an actual mouthbreather i don't even understand why he's still trying to argue

>>2502975
I don't care about FFA
You've contradicted yourself, first it was "you're endlessly playing catch up from a losing position without any actual ability to turn things around" and now it's "when one team begins to gain a total advantage." Is it an inability to turn things around or is it one team beginning to gain the advantage? You're tying yourself in knots

It's quite the opposite. By saying "that doesn't count because it's not 1v1" you implicitly acknowledge and substantiate the claim. You can be in denial about the issues at hand, but it doesn't bode well when the devs themselves have acknowledged and are working on it.
