as a new player, what's the deal with ancient era AoE? There's AoE I DE, Return of Rome in AoE II DE, and Chronicles in II DE? Which one do I play for funny chariots?
>>
>>2503384
AoE1 is more of a nostalgia product, I would struggle to recommend it over AoE2 in any way. Chronicles has plenty of chariots
>>
>>2503385
did some searching.. so if I'm mostly interested in getting ancient civs to play around with, I should focus on Chronicles? Is the one that seems to be getting updated. With AoE I DE being nostalgia as you said, and RoR being... also nostalgia release of the first game.... inside AoE II.... with some updates coming from the engine but no updates regarding the second game's design.... with the romans tacked on as a mainline civ? Like an in-between between AoE I DE and Chronicles? Am I getting that right?
>>
>>2503358
Isn't that meant to an FPS or some shit? And vaguely 'open-world', which could just be Far Cry or an excuse to be in dev hell for years on end. Whatever the case, they have a tabletop equivalence that released this year, which is apparently good and I can see why if nu-Blizzard barely has a hand in it.
>>
>>2503384
>AoE
You want to play the unaltered original campaigns, warts and all. Or you are Vietnamese.
>AoE DE
You want some QoL from AoE II and then some, but not all of it, and want to play through some altered campaigns.
>Return of Rome
You want to play AoE I skirmishes with relatively better balancing and many more game settings, and maybe a few campaigns with AoE II scripting and polish but almost none of the originals.
>AoM (Retold)
You want some crazy on top.
>AoE Online (Celeste)
You want the IP's last hurrah after the devs had to unfuck their F2P model, but before Forgotten Empires eventually changed everything.
>Chronicles
You want AoE II but set in antiquity from the Iron Age.
>>
>>2503387
Yes there are plenty of ancient civs in chronicles, and Battle for Greece and Alexander are a masterclass of AoE2 campaigns
>>
Does anyone else think the last patch was awful? A bunch of nerfs to off meta strats, pathing especially for villagers is at its worst it's ever been, shift queue is broken. Siege tower, eagles and champi all nerfed, slight nerfs to Chinese and Vietnamese is deserved but buffing a top 5 civs like vikings is stupid, new Arabia sucks and it wasting a slot in the 1v1 pool. New civs are cool but underperformimg (except Saxons which is op).

I've been trying to main magyars so I can kinda toughen myself up while I learn the game since their bonuses are kinda bad and they have the worst eco in the game, and I'm certainly getting fucked. I've had games where I'm constantly producing vills while raiding the fuck out of the opponent and I still get outeco'd. I played against vikings recently and the guy's economy was way better than mine. Checked the vill count after i resigned, he had 30 vills less than me, yet he had a lot more military and could afford more techs than I could. And he was 3 TCing just like I was, this wasn't a "he was going all in with military while you were booming with a civ that's bad at booming", no, he had 30 vills less because I killed a lot of his vills. Didn't matter in the end.
1050 elo btw
>>
>>2503504
Could be a lot of things:
>you forgot eco upgrades
>you're not making farms early enough
>you had too many idle villagers
Most likely though he had more units than you because you lost them all raiding him, while he could trade efficiently under TC fire.
>>
>>2503515
I always take a long time to research wheelbarrow and handcart. Been thinking of getting into the habit of researching the former as the last thing I do in feudal before clicking up but I always get scared of it delaying my castle time too much.
>Most likely though he had more units than you because you lost them all raiding him, while he could trade efficiently under TC fire.
Probably, but I mean, surely losing 13 knights is worth killing 20 vills?
>>
>>2503522
not to mention all the idle time, right?
>>
>>2503522
>Probably, but I mean, surely losing 13 knights is worth killing 20 vills?
It is, but you have to keep producing knights as well to keep the advantage. IDK it's hard to say what went wrong without watching a rec. If you have a 30 vill lead you should at the very least be able to match your opponents army, even with a disadvantage in eco upgrades
>>
>>2503528
>but you have to keep producing knights as well to keep the advantage
he was starting to get a scary number of pikemen, i attempted a tech switch into CA but before I knew it i had loaded rams in my base
this is what I mean when saying getting outeco'd

yeah and how often does that happen AND there's still enough gold on the map for you to afford a double gold comp? think about how strong being able to make an imperial age unit in castle age normally is and then ask yourself why people rarely bother to use that advantage when playing as bohemians.
>>
>>2503504
Might be an issue with production, make sure you are constantly producing and have enough production buildings. Also post a rec. I can't really help much without a rec.
>>
>>2503721
yeah well there's your problem
also, assooming you dont play hindus cuz they're brown, then why do you play moortuguese?
>>2503728
wdym? there's plenty of gold in imperial, are you popping up at like min 45? double gold comps aren't that rare in imperial, and you can always do hussar+shatagni HC if you want a trash+gold combo
>think about how strong being able to make an imperial age unit in castle age normally is and then ask yourself why people rarely bother to use that advantage when playing as bohemians
first of all, at least in my shitter elo of 1300, i almost always see bohemian players going for castle age handcannons
second, i guess cavalier are shit then because the civ that gets them in castle age has a sub 50% win rate in every elo range
>>
>>2503739
cavalier in castle age is obviously good and apparently was good enough for lierry to use in the finals of wololo (but not good enough to beat hera). now think about this: arbs without bracer are supposed to be worse than hand cannons, yet even the powercreep loving devs haven't tried to make a civ that gets arb in castle age. how can getting a weaker unit early be so much more powerful than getting one that's supposed to be stronger? the reasoning here is why hand cannons are weak and should be buffed.
>>
>>2503747
Honestly arb in castle is weaker than early chemistry, arb only gives like 5 hp and 1 attack while chemistry is like half the price, gives + 1 attack to crossbow and defensive buildings + siege.
>>
>>2503750
chemistry takes literally twice as long to research, requires building a university first, and is always a tech switch instead of just upgrading units you were already making.
>>
>>2503776
>is always a tech switch instead of just upgrading units you were already making.
but chemistry upgrades units you're already making...
>>
>>2503779
if you are making crossbows and already researched fletching and bodkin why would you stop making them and switch to hand cannons? don't forget that you also have to switch from wood economy to food economy to make hand cannons.
>>
File: screen cap pepe.jpg (217 KB, 616x625)
217 KB JPG
>>2503780
chemistry upgrades the crossbows, you don't need to switch
>>
>>2503782
so hand cannons are so weak it's not even worth tech switching to them vs crossbows
>>
>>2503780
gee idk maybe fletching and bodkin are useful for more than just xbow micro? Maybe there's no other reason for those two upgrades tell me if you can think of anything else, better never tech switch again if you're going down that hyperspecialized path

Danes the most balanced civ of the trio, if a little weak (as all Infantry and siege civs are). Hamask is kinda busted. Food bonus does less than you'd think in early game. Dane Varangians are awesome. Raze bonus is nice but is not a game changer. UU is nice but very situational. Food bonus is amazing for late game farm eco. Dane SO's are awesome but you need to get there in the first place.
Danes feels pretty much like a better Celts, but you still have the same weaknesses as Celts, to a lesser degree.

Varangians are hideously overpowered in Nomad maps, specially regular nomad where they can do mass scouts + fish boom. Gorillon Scouts and then Knights. Jarls are very strong. I'd say Varangian Guards are strong for this civ but I rarely face them, they all opt to spam cavalry and nothing else.

Saxons are an ungodly amalgation between Goths and Byzantines, everyone archer rushes with this civ. Not a threat early on, but become borderline impossible to root out if you dont have good siege. Saxon UU starts countering pretty much everything once FU with all unit discounts. Must rush in Arena least the game drags for 2 hours. Also trushes, so many trushes.
>>
>>2504341
Thanks for the review Jeetmaster. Do you think any of the new civs will replace Armenia for you?
>>
>>2504254
I'm talking about castle age hand cannons, in imp they lose to arb unless you are hindustanis which can outrange.

>>2504252
Not always, dravidians, wei and Armenians were all pay to lose and had to receive major buffs before they were on par with existing civs.
>>
they should remove the shields from MAA and LS, only units with high pierce armor should have shields

No, the niches are dark age spears to counter trushing teutons, feudal longswords against scouts, castle 2handers against knights, compbowmen hard countering cavalry, and 100 hp champs.
Also the random funni Warrior Priest rush

What we could have is camel scout type of thing for castle units instead, sort of like a feudal monk that can only heal and instantly turns into real monks when you reach castle. Maybe a slow-moving donkey riding small range cav archer.

Knight and cav archer pre upgrades will never be a thing because you would steamroll the opponent as soon as you reach castle age. It only works for camel rider because it's a counter unit

It's kind of weird because you don't wanna go CA with persians but then they have arguably the best castle age CA in the game.
They sure do have a weird range. Best castle CA, bad imperial CA, normal castle xbow, no arbs and terrible imperial xbows, but a unique tech encouraging you to make them.
>>
>>2506449
Their imp CAs aren't so bad. Yes, missing bracer hurts, but they do what you need them to.
Persians want something to counter spears and camels, and have a bunch of imperfect options to do so. CAs miss bracer in imp, but are great in castle and can keep up with your cavalry. Trashbows are dirt cheap, but they're really weak come imp. You've got FU hand cannons, but no actual bonuses for them. And onagers exist, but only just, no SO or engineers. Pick your poison.

Will playing random civs on random maps against extreme AI make me git gud
>>
>>2506588
no. Focus on a civ, focus on a map (arabia) practice against extreme AI and then go online
>>
>>2506588
You should probably stick to arabia or similar maps to learn the game. Just practice against AI until you can execute 1-2 basic buildorders (scouts and MAA into range), know how to boom, get familiar with the hotkeys and know basic unit counters. Fastest way to improve is to play online after you know the basics. If you can reliably beat the extreme AI it's time to start ranked

So...just QS Arabia?

No, I learned this by recently beating them with a pretty easy strat.
You just round them up like sheep like a dog eventually and it becomes a little boring.

There are better AIs out there for niche things, but they also kinda suck.

Any 3 players here? Why should you use unit cards? They cost resources, population and it takes time for the card to arrive so why shouldn't you just send an economy card and build regular troops? Also why do some natives/mercs cost population at embassies and others don't?

I haven't played in forever and I was pretty shit when I did but I think you are only supposed to use the villager card early on and save most of your shipments for fortress age or later. sending troops can be a big timing advantage since you can get them faster than you would by sending money and having to tech into them and build them.

I have a confession.
As much as I hate activision blizzard, I really did want to play Starcraft 1 as a kid if it had more of the expansive civ set that AoE2 had and looked still like starcraft 1's art design. I don't understand how they fucked up the designs with 2 and was very disappointed with Warcraft 3 and DotA as a kid. LoL was not an interest because I never like DotA. Didn't feel like a proper war rts and felt like an rpg instead with simplified micro. Diablo IV wasn't great, but it was an improvement on III definitely, especially with look.

Anyway, what I'm saying is I hope AoE2 design starts to influence those more. Because I don't really like hero units (though Diablo is a different thing entirely and not really an rts) that much and those games could use more influence on the brutal war aspect. Starcraft was ok, but warcraft just feels so fluffy when it should feel like Minas Tirith with war.
That said, Battle for Middle Earth was kinda a missed opportunity in the end. Fucking EA. It was okish, but it also felt very shit at times. That should have just gone full AoE2 and ignored the book's plot. Expand the universe with factions and have campaigns. There is a lore limitation there.

/autistic blabber.

>remember that time a meme critical of the WOKEness of the HD edition actually sold the fucking HD Edition out of obscurity
We thank our lord, t. Alberto Barbosa.
This used to happen with Warcraft too back in the day. Critical memes just sorta fed it. Other games didn't really have that positive reaction to critical memes much, but these two games did.
>>
>>2507930
I'm pretty sure if you pretend to be someone else and then reveal otherwise just after everyone bought it, there could be issues consumer expectations.
Don't get me wrong, this happens all the time and they get away with it all the time though. Consumer law is essentially an empty threat at this point.

But if you expect a certain team to be providing the "service" and you replace them with a team of monkeys from Burma, there is clearly a consumer law contravention. If people expected a specific team to maintain the service because of their specific expertise there might be issues.
Now if this game wasn't a mere license and was a product, there would be much less issues.
>>
>>2507930
to add to >>2507939
Oh, you're saying World's Edge still exists by name as a facade?
That might make them get away with some liberties, but I'm pretty sure consumer law frowns upon that even more than merely replacing World's Edge with Activision. At least in Australia but I'm pretty sure Aus, US, UK, Canada, NZ are following policies that they all agreed to in order to make consumer law more uniform in these countries. That said, these notoriously don't work kek.
>>
>>2507939
Who got replaced?
>>
>>2507944
World's Edge, by the sounds of it, just got gutted completely and now Activision handles it. Xbox/MS is trying to cut employee numbers.

>what's the bet they'll push AI fucking everywhere to cover these things
>>
>>2507943
>>2507944
>>2507950
World's Edge had a big chunk of their staff fired, and was made a subsidiary of Activision (which is a subsidiary under Microsoft). Previously I think World's Edge reported directly to Xbox. We don't know if Activision has put in their own people in positions within World's Edge.

Also worth noting that World's Edge are not developers. They are producers and managers who outsource all development of all Age games to third-party studios, most notably Forgotten Empires, CaptureAge, and Relic (for the initial development of AoE4).
>>
>>2507934
>I hope AoE2 design starts to influence those more. Because I don't really like hero units (though Diablo is a different thing entirely and not really an rts) that much and those games could use more influence on the brutal war aspect. Starcraft was ok, but warcraft just feels so fluffy when it should feel like Minas Tirith with war.
Will never happen since warcraft runs on the "anything that is not a villager cost 2+ pop" logic. So, while you can mass an army of 50 or so knights in AoE II, that same 50 pop army would be just 12 knights in Warcraft. That, plus the bigger health pools and heroes, make everything look less like a battle and more like a gang fight.

Let's say you are making heavy infantry, the enemy scouts you and counters with light infantry then you send your cavalry card and rape him, unit cards also save you build a stable on this example.
Economic cards need more time to have an impact on game but unit cards can change a battle or waste a shipment if used badly.

A friend of mine who got into the game recently, after making it to 1200 elo mostly playing 3 chinkdoms, armenians, and recently the viking civs, asked to 1v1 me. The game starts, he looks at my civ, and screams "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS EVEN A SARACEN???"

I think putting Saracens that low is crazy. You've got FU arbs, champions, hussars, heavy cavalry archers and heavy camels. Bimaristan monks are great and can fully heal your army in seconds, plus they're fully upgraded. Throw one in the middle of your arbs and they won't die to anything that doesn't one-shot them and the monk can convert enemy mangonels.
You've got siege ram and siege onager with siege engineers and Counterweights.
Market bonus gives you better rates than anyone in games that last long and earlier can be used to get good timing on a push or to adjust based on what the enemy's doing.
I'm not some 2000+ ELO pro player but I don't see how such a flexible civ could be considered weak.
>>
>>2510542
his reasoning is that their eco bonus sucks after the market nerf, and late game you have a lot of good options but no great ones
>>
it's interesting how so much of the current balance changes the game has been getting are downstream of red phosphoru. so many units, techs, and civ bonuses getting hit because players and devs have decided that this is the "wrong" way to win the game. meanwhile starcraft had 0 protoss in the last asl top 8 and the mindset is just "I guess it's time to reinvent pvz again."
>>

>However they'll be the next SPLEET civ I'm sure.

>>
>>2510542
It's a tierlist for pro tournament play on all maps, not general ranked 1v1 arabia. That said, Saracens are a little on the weak side. Market, camel and monk bonus are all very situational and a lot of games you just feel like you are playing generic civ with wide tech tree. Berbers and Sicilians are also in D-tier and they're honestly just better civs in most cases.

I say this as someone who plays them a lot btw, mamelukes are cool and not every civ needs to be top tier

right, and Hera is the only pro who complains about elephant archers.

the ones against autofarms and killing the boar with the TC ain't gonna like this one...
>>
>>2511599
Deer luring shouldn't be a thing in the first place.
>>
>>2511600
You want chickens in every arabia game? I wouldn't mind.
>>
>>2511599
It's whatever, if the deer are far you still probably have to manually push it if there is something in the way. And also it will still more or less take the same amount of time and sacrifice scouting info. I get free sheep in my ranked games pretty often because my opponent insists on pushing every deer around his base during dark age without scouting around
>>
>>2511599
I'm just learning now after a year of playing that you had to use the follow command to lure deer. I always just right clicked them, maybe that's why they were so unpredictable.
>>
>>2511603
I just want deer to behave just like chickens in all maps. Pushing is so annoying and forces your scout to stay in your base rather than actualy scout the map.
>>
>>2511835
nobody used follow before because it was extra clicks compared to just moving next to them normally, now it's the best way to do it
>>
when are they adding auto play?
>>
Heres how I see it:
>autolure/autofarm/TC killing meat
>GOOD
>autoscout
>BAD
and yes I know nobody uses auto scout past a certain elo, but it always felt like it makes new players retarded
>>
>>2511944
>nobody uses auto scout past a certain elo
even pros use it late game
>>
autofarm and autoscout are fine. TCs killing boars, autolure, and whatever further auto they add isnt fine.
>>
I'd like autofarm and autoscout if they actually placed farms and scouted well.
TCs killing boars and pushing deer is stupid.
>>
>>2512129
whats so bad about TCs killing boar? people were already using the TC to take 90% of the boar's health, you think pressing G after that is some huge skill expression?
>>
>>2512207
It never made any sense. Leftover from AoE1 codebase which made it so hunt and other units would behave differently. In AoE1 if you could kill hunt with military, your villagers would've been able to throw spears in combat against other units, which was overpowered considering it took another age up and building to get to archers.
AoE2 kept the same principle but it was always out of place.
>>
>>2512207
>people were already using the TC to take 90% of the boar's health
That's dumb.

Finished the Viking Sagas campaigns
It was good, I think the story was above average
Missions the usual straightforward attack-defend, but they've got a hero mission in there as well
Could've had more Saxon missions, but I respect that they had a story to stick to

Achievements could have been more interesting

>Could've had more Saxon missions, but I respect that they had a story to stick to
I don’t. Wanting to stick to Harald was a decision they made, and it resulted in the Danes and especially Saxons getting cucked out of campaigns. It’s not worth it.

As good as the campaign is, in mp god powers create a meta entirely centered around some cheesy timing attacks that straight up end the game. If you're not the kind of person to enjoy doing siege monk rushes 100 games in a row, 2 and 4 are just better.
>>
>>2514577
Came here just now to post about it
I'm a casual player and it's my fav Rts
The coop crucible is really fun and the civ designs are cool
>>
>>2514746
At this point I wouldn't mind if it just had:

>fourth major god for every pantheon or at least every pre-DLC civ, and a less shitty select screen to not have any scrolling
>a bit more variety in Arena of the Gods, plus the story one doesn't even have a proper ending for Kastor's one there and the gauntlet lacks Aztec challenges currently
>less sad daily challenge bullshit that doesn't have esoteric scoring mechanics and a piddly Simple/Fine blessing - which is negligible compared to all the Heroic ones you get through gauntlet

The DLCs are mostly okay, whether it could use another one or two is another, but I'm just glad it hasn't had anything as terrible as Tale of the Dragon again.

>>2514748
On that note, it's strange how all of these post-release game modes that get made are segregated between games. Guess they need a selling point for each one.
>>

I kinda like them since I pulled off a couple coups in arena at my 1200 Elo (not monk ele ram)
>>
>>2515389
They really need some bonus HP/armor on their mills and/or the ability to fire arrows off it.
>>
>>2515293
It's always Cumans, bad early, bad imperial

>>2515389
Gurjara are not bad, people just dont know what to do with them

They're weak if you run out of gold though
>>
>>2515445
no they don't
if i were to pick one thing to change with the mill it would be the trickle food rate being unique to each mill for the starting sheep, ie 6 sheep in 1 mill be equivalent to 1 free vill farming (about 21fpm) but 3 mills with 2 sheep in each would be ~1.5 vills (about 31fpm) and conceivably 6 mills with 1 sheep apiece would give ~36fpm.
>>

>>
>>2515389

>>2515452
>people just dont know what to do with them
That tracks too. I don't know what the fuck you're supposed to do with them. All their units suck.
>>
>>2515485
Give them an earlier eco bonus to keep up until the farming bonus kicks in, like what they did with Franks.
Buff their infantry. They're only very slightly better than basic bitch boys until Druzhina.
Buff their siege. Give them BBC. Everyone has had the experience of first looking at Slavs, seeing that siege discount, getting excited about BBCs cheaper than trebs, then being crushed when they don't have them. Remove one of the other FU options to compensate, them getting the entire tree would be a lot.
Bracer?? Detracts from the shit archers theme, though.
The biggest stretch, but maybe something with their castle UT? Whatever it's called, the stone to wood one. It's nice, but awkward that you need to build a full-price castle first.
>>
>>2515389
rankings dont mean anything unless its the +1900elo range
>>
>>2515501
eh, i don't think they need booombard cannons, cheaper trebs are already pretty good and it would probably not fit the civ
i was thinking of cheaper upgrades for the siege weapons but i think bulgarians have that already
maybe cheaper siege workshops? something like 100wood
>>
>>2515505
Give BBC, change bonus from "Siege weapons are 15% cheaper" to "Siege workshops and siege workshop units are 15% cheaper."
>>
>>2515485
Honestly maybe an extra unique unit? Boyars are fine but I never really found them worth making a castle for. Perhaps they could replace slavs cavalier upgrade with boyar and introduce a new unique unit from the castle thats good against archers. Some kind of ghulam/eagle type unit or some unique siege unit thats not quite as slow as other siege. No idea what would be a good historical fit though.
>>
>>2515502
Lol I would be surprised if there is even a single person above 2k in these threads
>>
File: Rus_AoE4.jpg (813 KB, 1920x1080)

>>2515548
Borrowing from Age4, they could have an early knight that requires upgrade into regular knight in castle age. That switch would mean boyars would be less expensive than getting a castle for detinets, too
I'd call the unit "druzhina," if it weren't already the UT, so maybe "mladshaia" (junior druzhina) for the unit, or renaming that UT as "mechnik" (swordsman-official)
But having boyar as a shared cavalier replacement for slavspleet could work as well

That sounds fucking dangerous balance-wise.
>>
>>2515561
They really shouldn't introduce new units to feudal. It's more or less perfectly balanced atm. Camel scouts are not too bad since they are expensive and not very good against units that arent cavalry, but they still set a bad precedent and shouldnt be in the game imo. Feudal age knights would upset the balance way too much and also dont really match the slav theme in particular
>>
>>2515505

slavs don't get cheaper trebs
