If I develop chess variants, what should I pay attention to that other games tend to get wrong? Is it even worth trying to break into this space?
>>
chess is a puzzle game not a strategy
>>
why would they be on steam? it's not really a gamer type game. don't the big sites already offer fisher random and such
>>
why would i play your goofy chess variant when i could just play chess, or some game that isn't chess-but-x

>Why is chess so popular
it's old. and not bad for an old game. everyone knows of it, but few people know it.
>but there are no popular chess variants on steam
there are plenty, and not just on steam. but that's the problem. divides the audience.
people capable of playing and enjoying those kind of games are usually capable of making those kinds of games themselves.
for a long while now, games have been all about marketing.

there are so many chess games on steam it's not even funny. type "chess" in search. and that is just off by name, where most are implementation of the base game.

if you want to make money making games, find an unknown game with a cool concept, completely rework it through constant playtesting and refining, then when all core gaming concepts are implemented,
(ends at the peak of fun, a session is around 45 minutes, makes you feel like your actions matter, but keeps it "fresh", and doesn't rely on single strategy, bunch of other psychological tricks),
you do an astro turf campaign, get few popular streamers to review your game,
and if you get really lucky, you just about made your money back.

With what above is saying, you'd need to aim to release 4 games or so a year minimum.
anything less than that, stick to burger flipping.

Few people play chess vidya, even fewer will be into derivatives. Instead, take the chess theme and make something else, like rogueshite or horrorslop (with waifu). I think a Balatro clone with simplified gameplay and extremely addictive scoring gimmick could do the trick.
