Looking for a fantasy or sci-fi rts, I love rpgs, amd have played a few of the mainstream strategy games before. XCOM, DOW etc. Why did I mention I like rpgs? I don't play pvp, so if the game your going to recommend doesn't have great singleplapyer appeal, I'm not interested.

Just play Warcraft 3's campaign, that's where a lot of people started.
You don't need to know the background of the first two games. Some evil wizard consorted with demons to help orcs invade the world, humans fought orcs alongside elves and the orcs lost, that's basically it.
It plays a lot like an RPG

StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War. I don't particularly like its gameplay, but it had fantastic campaigns.
The original Homeworld also had a great campaign; you may want to use the original rather than the Gearbox remake which changed some of the gameplay around, but the remake's probably easier to run.

age of empires 2 DE, the historical campaigns are great for new players.

There's Stellaris, it never appealed to me, but it does have sci-fi stuff, and can be a fun singleplayer game, not to mention Kenshi if you like post apocalyptic sci-fi stuff.
