I have no idea but I think it could be more literal, there are "gates" that have to be unlocked and passed through, maybe on the stage itself. Metaphorical inner gates might work to dress up a level up system or transformation or mode change though. I had a dream I ran into Harada on the streets in Tokyo and he was telling me about his studio's new game systems, and I was trying to hide my disappointment that it was going in the direction of adding crazy amounts of complications and system mechanics. One of those was "gates".
