Thinking about the perpetual MR meat grinder Hanabi is in and it just occurred to me how hard it is to see any progress in a fighting game with randomish opponents in general let alone SF6. Like take for example a racing game where any improvements are pretty immediately obvious in lap time or race time or whatever (all of this applies to speedrunning as well). Then you get a fighting game, and lets say you don't know how to fight Honda (because of course you don't). For simplicity I'll say you have a 25% win rate and play against him 1% of the time. You can learn to PP him and get up to 50%, and my math says over the next 1000 games that will average out to a gain of...23MR. Basically just statistical noise for what feels like something pretty big.

Maybe the real takeaway from that is something like learning to hit optimal kill combos is way more worthwhile than obscure matchups though.

Progress in a fighting game is measured in multiple and significantly more metrics than just race time after all, gaining points is just a side effect of all of those values going up to a certain threshold, that threshold being the average values of the players you randomly match up with. That also explains why getting good at only one thing doesn't help you gain more points, since it usually isn't enough to get you past the threshold.

Primarily skill issue, it's too mechanically hard to do the cool stuff, even in training mode, if there is a training mode. Secondarily they're just more boring relative to other games. Especially modern fighting games, the creativity is gone. The core experience is just too repetitive with not enough interesting variation between characters or stages or modes. It's like if the original Super Mario was just 8 or so screens of nothing but jumping on differently colored blocks to try and hit the top of the flagpole, over and over. Thirdly they don't make particularly great single player experiences, and the multiplayer experience is 1v1 which people don't like as much as teams because it shows them too directly how much they personally suck. Matchmaking doesn't help because they'll be losing around half the time still, whereas other games you can more easily become a big fish in a small pond where you win or at least get other proxies for not sucking like most kills way more often than half the time.
