One of the things is that image generation models are trained on basically everything they find, including huge quantities of IRL photography from stock image sites. The composition of a photograph will include a lot of detail because IRL has those details. But all that detail will only serve to hurt the composition of something like a sketch.Theoretically stuff like fine-tunes on anime images are supposed to correct stuff like that, but I get the impression many of the developers preparing fine tunes avoid touching the "low level" layers of the model that deal with composition, lighting, etc because it's easy to fuck those up training on a small data set.There's also some more architectural issues. The diffusion process tends to focus on local areas of the image, so it's harder for segments of the model to coordinate and say, "hey, maybe we have enough detail already, let's create some negative space." This harkens back to when models were fixed resolution, and running then to produce higher resolution outputs produced tiled images with each tile trying to implement the full prompt. Plus, no one ever trains the variational autoencoder these days. The models don't produce actual RGB pixel outputs, the produce a code that the VAE converts into RGB pixels, with significant "discretion" left to the VAE to fill in the gaps. Again, very hard to train a VAE on enough data to work well, and nearly every family of models has a completely unique "language" of code, so there is usually only one VAE per model family, and that VAE is as general-purpose as possible. This is why text gets so fucked up, because a VAE that's good at text is bad at photography, so it goes for the greatest common denominator.Probably more detail than /tactical/ needs on why AI art is so fucked looking, but I really gave it a serious try and spent a lot of time trying to understand it on the theoretical levels, and I'm desperate to have something to show for it, lol.
