I have been tentatively coming through the conclusion that competition streams have become less popular.To explain fairly, I need to talk about what makes a tournament ‘tick’. A tournament is a balance of two different aspects - a celebration and well… competition. High level play is interesting but it also requires a high level of understanding. If I’m a casual viewer, I don’t have time to understand the intricacy that made this player win over the other player, and so I tune out.So, a good game is definitely a competitive game with many skills and strategies, but also which is still fun if you are bad or new at the game. There are just… not many which fit the title.Why is the Big Three of Nijisanji the way that it is? Well, I think the three come the closest to fitting the above definition. Mahjong can be played at high-levels but it is still incredibly entertaining when the players play badly. A bad mistake in Mahjong is easily hilarious, like someone who deliberately breaks a yaku because they don’t know what they are doing and starts to panic, or Ars who only prefers a certain yaku without reason or rhyme, or Deron who gets obsessive with the Kan prize that she deliberately throws the game for a Kan chance.One could say similarly about PowerPro, as long as you are entertaining, a bad training can still be very entertaining - see Chaika’s 2024 Koshien training, or Mario Kart - which deliberately is a result of the balance, since Mario Kart is ostensibly a party game but there is a recognized competitive aspect. Personally, Mario Kart World falls flat because the game is a bit heavy on the competitive side - the few who stuck around and played the game competitively have come around with their perception of the game for this very reason.PowerPros is too niche to gain a general following, therefore the audience leans heavily towards sweaty gamers which locks out people who might enjoy more trifling parts of Koshien. And in general, the people’s level of various games have heavily increased.I didn’t really pay attention of VSaikyo SF6 this month because the competition has become incredibly sweaty. For those who are in the know, the competition seemed very satisfying, but for me, I kind of bounced out precisely because of the higher-level of play.But back to VTubers - the heightening of the competitive play in the VTuber world, to me, is the most proximate reason competition streams have been getting less views. Pointedly, Hololive, due to other pressures, have deliberately tried to outrun this competitive rise, with Towa’s Mario Kart tournament turning into a Game Festival, featuring games which have little to no competitive scene, which deliberately obfuscate the analysis and emphasizes on celebration.There has also been plenty of competition, which deliberately celebrates bad playing - like La+’s Worst Mario Kart Tournament or Miko’s Worst Gomoku Tournament. Meanwhile, a ’worst tournament’ in Nijisanji would honestly feel… a bit mean at this point, since Nijisanji is too wedded to the competitive scene in general.So, that means the crown jewel of Nijisanji would necessarily have to lose its shine. Although, Nijisanji apparently doesn’t care about this, as there has been more competition lately rather than fewer (another reason why Nijisanji tournament is getting less views probably stems from this tournament overload, as I mentioned a few editions ago).The reason is twofold - first, tournaments are still a great advertisement for the game. Although the tournament gets less views than years past, it’s still way better than any official videos that the different games offer. Second, tournaments serve a more internal purpose of making new connections and fostering old connections. I think there have been some internal calls to have more hako events specifically so to create more/stronger bonds between talents.

For the Aranami server, however, most of the people who were in the Junior servers are now highly proficient, and quite a few of the new people are proficient. So the dynamic really became older players guiding the few new players in how to play the game.This actually is beneficial, since the main characters kind of become these new players and these new players are people who need the attention the most. Nekoyashiki Miku, in her infinite wisdom, exploited the dynamic which basically ensured Yagyu Shino would be near the center of the server, and therefore Shino does not become a stumbling block that brings down Yoiyume as a whole, because Shino would drag the process regarding Nijisanji.And one could make a server not interesting - when you have the same people doing the same thing, the experience becomes a lot more routine, and that’s close to the definition of boring. VCR servers realized this problem and instituted Newtown, but while Newtown was ultimately a success, there was an awkward part in the start, because the new people were… new. Most viewers did not know the new players, so there was this awkward back and forth trying to suss out their quirks as the new player learned the ropes of GTA roleplaying.And this hints at the more general nature of learning experience, which Nijisanji heavily resides on - what makes an idol career exciting is the same what makes a game progression exciting which is the same what makes a history of a subculture exciting, they all about following some kind of learning curve, which makes you relate to a series of struggles, which is the binding glue of society. This is the reason humanity exists, at least to my end.Nijisanji is very much focused on creating a series of learning experiences but in a way that’s constantly exciting because it leans on familiarity to ground the audience, to make the audience click in a sense. Nijisanji heavily tries to follow and create gaming and streaming trends, which means familiar people go through new learning curves, but they also constantly debut new people but push them into the same Nijisanji pipeline, so you have the familiarity of the pipeline but with new people, much like Newtown. So, you have both kinds of balances.
