YouTube is changing how they count views. What was previously implemented only for shorts, will now affect all kinds of videos, including streams, and views will be counted from the moment of displaying the first frame.
Prepare for video spam and endless viewbotting. Also lots of confusion as every channel will suddenly explode in view count.

9/11 for /#/saars

Only for those in the know. Majority of casual viewers (and sponsors) pay more attention to views.
>>
>>114208421
The clip reuploaders job just became more important
>>
>>114208421
Important to note though that for monetisation purposes it only counts "engaged views" which is the old view count method (ie at least 30 seconds watched). So this isn't really changing anything meaningfully - not sure what the point is.
>>
>>114208581
That's a good point. It shouldn't have a big effect on those who rely on YouTube for their income. Many content creators however rely more on sponsors, and those are much more likely to pay attention to views increasing.
>>
>>114208581
>not sure what the point is
YouTube needs to show product metric number goes up
>>
>>114208601
True.
>>
>>114208581
It makes the number it displays more meaningless
>>
>>114208581
They probably just want big numbers, because other platforms (TikTok) have big numbers, due to how they count views.
>>
Do you even need to click a video to be counted when there's autoplay of video thumbnails
>>
>>114208421
>>114208581
Anon is correct. What "counts" in terms of monetization is the same, they'll just stop culling the casual viewer like they have been in terms of archival.
>>
>>114209435
pretty sure yes, although...i think autoplay makes things show in history so idk
>>
>>114209435
With autoplay? No, you don't need to click. That's the point.
>>
>>114209435
>autoplay of video thumbnails
You can turn that off; I presumed most people did so but maybe I'm in the minority.
>>
>>114209435
Nope. That's the point.
>>
>>114209808
Majority of people never visit the settings page, anon.
>>
> "making it easier to show their value to brand partners"

What value does someone watching a video for 3 seconds before realizing it's slop and closing it have to "brand partners". Do they really think they are this stupid.
>>
They really should only count a view if the viewer stays through the entire video, studies it, takes a quiz and gets 100%, answering what they saw, attends the channel creator's birthday party and would attend their funeral.
>>
>>114209918
Sadly, they ARE this stupid
>>
>>114209918
Yes anon, that's how the world works.
>>
>>114208601
I think that sponsors already ask creators for KPIs that are more precise than those available to the public during negotiations
>>
>>114208421
So if I press F5, it will count as new view???
>>
>>114210120
Most likely not. But you autoplaying a frame of some random video while scrolling the YouTube app on your phone probably will
>>
>>114210096
You'd be surprised.
Some of them, sure. Majority? Certainly no.
>>
>>114210143
what if Im in Incognito? They wont count me as views also while refreshing?
>>
>>114210183
I don't know anon, I'm not an engineer at Google. But even though I have very little faith in the people running YouTube right now, I can't imagine they haven't at least set up a system to prevent this kind of extremely naive abuse of the system
>>
>>114208421
The numbers were fake before and they will be fake now too. None of this matters.
>>
>>114209465
This can quickly ruin your recommendations
>>
>>114210120
It already did. if you have the page for a song open for example and run a refresh script every 5 minutes it does count. It's unofficial but people say say 4-5 views per day are fine. If the same IP is spamming refreshes there is a chance of it getting caught and filtered. Kpop fans studied how to play the system

ITT: /vt/ starts to figure out why monopolies are a problem and why "the free market" isn't always paradise. Something to remember next time your favorite chud gets on a high horse about deregulation. If youtube can squeeze its userbase to profiteer this easily, imagine what more opaque industries do on a regular basis.
>>
>>114212206
1.) Not sure why you're trying to start a political debate about this. 2.) You'd be hard pressed to find any anon who has a positive word to say about YouTube or Twitter (the console war like behaviour on this board between viewers of YT chuubas and Twitch chuubas is about the culture around the vtubers themselves, not about love for either site). 3.) Political grifters in the vtuber sphere (and to a certain extent the wider world) of both stripes focus on cultural issues almost exclusively; it's rare that any of them make any actual economic arguments or even address economics at all.
>>
>>114212867
1.) You kinda do. 2.) Indeed. 3.) Connect the dots. There are a looooot of people drinking the alt-right chud koolaid on cultural issues who, today, are getting a another taste of the economic side effects. We live in the promised pro-business paradise and yet the economy is a shit-show that the alt-right currently owns. I think directly pointing out the cause-effect relationship is valid.
>>
Is this why when I open youtube on my phone now, it immediately starts blasting a short at me instead of going to the homepage or whatever?
>>
>>114209918
Yes because the people investing in it just see bigger numbers. The entire e industry is hoping you can scam the next person into investing. It's a self jerk off of money.
>>
>>114213568
If you closed the app whilst watching a short or without properly closing the short it'll automatically play a random one when you next open it. It's been the case for a while and I've not found a way to turn this off.
>>
>>114213647
But I never watch shorts and it suddenly started happening about a week ago
>>
>>114213660
Oh I've no idea then. Thankfully I've not experienced that yet but then again I don't update apps until they're no longer functioning properly.
>>
what if I watch streams on my 2nd monitor
>>
>>114212206
Ok Vlad no one cares
>>
>>114209420
I do not think this is going to work out because comparing YouTube to TikTok is actually like comparing oranges to apples. Oranges are like long form content on YouTube, and apples are like short form content on TikTok. Even though both YouTube and TikTok both have short form and long term content, it is clear that each platform is known for having one over the other. YouTube already updated their view count as OP stated a while back to allow us to compare YouTube Shorts traffic to TikTok traffic. We know TikTok gets more traffic on short term content compared to YouTube. And we also know that goes for Rumble.
>>
>>114208421
If anything is good news for old vtubers.
Bad news for new vtubers.
>>
>>114215966
>And we also know that goes for Rumble.
Apparently you can't access Rumble from Brazilian ISPs because the site is legally banned on ISP level.
>>
Yes I saw Jelly Hoshiumi's racist dogwhistle tweet about this. Not gonna shed a tear for changing backend of a trash social media site.
>>
>>114208421
they're so desperate for money
>>
>>114208421
I don't think this is gonna matter for vtubers themselves that much, but it's absolutely going to make clipper clickbait even more egregious
