The thing with Puyo is at the low levels, that even Riona as one of the better Tetris players participating is still at, is that you can just quickly "Frog-stack" a bunch of shit on the sides of the board with minimal thought and hope to luck into combos.
When Pekora taught it to Vivi she managed to beat Pekora a bunch of times using it and Pekora is a lot better at Tetris than any of the participants.

Yeah. Low level Tetris is just way fucking weaker than low level Puyo.
Once you get to the mid levels it balances out a bit and at the high levels the situation reverses and Tetris has a tremendous advantage over Puyo, but almost none of the people participating are even approaching the mid levels.

It seems the Tetris players don't know that the 4wide combo strat exists, so they will lose to puyopuyo players, the tspin and tetris harassment is inefficient

T spin, 6-3 tetris and perfect clear setups are bad against Puyo Puyo, combos are the way to go because you create a layer of garbage unless they also finish their setup at the same time as you, and if they do it early you can continue comboing and doing tspins with the garbage

Yes, for the most part once you get the basics down. Higher initial difficulty curve when learning on your own, but Marine made it much easier for them. I think the tournament setup was pretty flawed here -- should have have kept it strictly tetris v tetris/puyo v puyo for the first round with the next round pitting the puyo/tetris players against each other. Would have made for more interesting matches.

Make no mistake, Puyo is still a skill based game despite what anons are saying here. For example, you saw Aki and others score a few 5-chain combos. Meanwhile, Marine can consistently get 9 and 10 chains without frogging, and she's not a high-rated player.

Tetris has an advantage here. One reason is that when Puyo receives junk it lands on top, which can mess up chains.
Puyo is also somewhat limited by the obvious animation locks. While a long chain is happening, a skilled Tetris player can neutralize it with their own back-to-backs and build up another stack before the Puyo player is even allowed to press buttons again.
