Nene kept her IP, and she can always go back to it. If she does go to Holo, she can have huge collabs, concerts, and events that she couldn't as an indie. Worst case, she finds out she doesn't like the restrictions and quits just like most of HoloEN Gen 1.

I don't remember that one. I've been missing most of her streams due to a major move involving a time zone change.

Mostly, I was thinking of her demo reel and constant hustling. She's never been content to just coast along, and five years is an awfully long time to stay in a single place, especially when you don't have any external help but you have big dreams of concerts.

I'm thinking back to the shutdown of Kawaii, and Nene was massively broken up about it, even if she got one of the best IP deals in vtubing. (See Raki Kazuki's 10k fundraiser) On some level, I think Nene desperately wants to live the idol dream, and losing her corporate sponsor meant that dream had to die.

Which is why I strongly suspect Hololive. I can't imagine Nene in the same company as Pippa. Although I don't think Nene is internet pilled like some other vtubers, so maybe she doesn't know the deep lore of some of the other companies. My assumption is a bit of both. Kawaii didn't have enough money to fight in negotiations, and losing months of work invested into an entire generation didn't help their financial struggles. I don't remember any other vtuber org getting an entire generation poached, ever. I'm assuming Kawaii's contracts weren't very competitive, primarily because they didn't have a lot of money to spend.

As for the generation, I'm not sure. I half kept up with Mozu when she was in Kawaii because she did some ASMR, but Mozu isn't very smart. She relied on gimmicks to get noticed which was fine the first time she debuted, but you can only watch so many crayon eating streams before you go insane.

I eventually stopped watching her when I realized she had the personality of a piece of cardboard and about as much intelligence. Plus, seeing her new design be a carbon copy of her old one left a bad taste in my mouth. Like, was the pay really that much better at your new company? Was it worth screwing over professional relationships? It seemed like a really dumb move, even before I found out they got poached.

True, but see above. Niji is a proper black company that actively exploits workers for pure profit. Kawaii seems more incompetently run than maliciously run. I don't blame Nene for snubbing their song because they did hurt her a lot, but them going bankrupt was a pretty brutal wakeup to how bad their financials really were. Nene's failed concert and idol dreams mostly came down to a lack of money, I think. It turns out a company run by one guy and a dream only works if you're a fish.

Things could have been much worse. Raki had to pay 10k for the "privilege" of owning her own IP, and many other companies have refused to even sell their IP, leaving talents stranded. Kawaii at least had the moral decency to give very valuable IP to their talents for literally free. I've seen completely brutal nasty shit done by companies that are going bankrupt. At a minimum, I know that Niji is 100x worse than Kawaii.

The sheer failure of the entire Hanamizuki generation points more towards mismanagement than active harm, even if both types of companies suck for the talents. I still say that Niji is a dramatically worse company to work for, even if I wouldn't want to work at either one. I'd take a job at Kawaii if I was desperate, but I'd never take a job at Niji. I can handle working at a mismanaged company (most are), but I can't handle a company that actively exploits its workers. To be honest all things considered it's kind of a miracle that kawaii managed to get a few gold nuggets (for me it's Isla and Kohaku, even if Kohaku is on a break at the moment) and in general more good vtubers over bad vtubers (aka Oceane Otoishi but I digress). I suppose all I'm really trying to say is that there's a difference between a true black company (Niji) and a mismanaged or incompetent company (Kawaii). Both can fail, hurt workers, or make huge public screwups, but there is a difference. I recommend working at neither, but I have a much higher tolerance for bad management after working in corporate American for far too long. Most companies are mismanaged on some level, so you have to learn to deal with it without complaining if you like getting your paycheck.

One major difference is that I heard Niji required their talents to front the money for things like concerts or merch drops, which meant talents were in literal debt to the company that held their paycheck as ransom. The worst I heard about Kawaii was Nene being depressed because the were cutting back on events for financial reasons. That hurts, but far less than being a literal wage slave for a job you can't quit.

I wasn't super into gen 3 at the time but what I got from osmosis in the old /pkg/, though it was actively going to shit at the time, was that it seriously hobbled the company's image and cost them a lot.
Keep in mind that the gen 3 walkout happened only a couple months after Oceane got terminated over running an alleged doxxing server, and all of this was only about six months after Neena had a massive (relatively) public breakup with the company and tried to burn their reputation. Kawaii had problems that would hit them every couple of months pretty much since their inception, and my nigga would rail against bad management / inattention from Benji, Benji 2, Cowlin, etc.
Gen 3's models were all expensive and very well done, especially when you compare it to the next gen Hanamizuki who got some cheapo flat faces with shitty rigging. I never watched gen 5 so I have no idea how good they were.
