Having done so with other media, I think this would have been an uncomfortable mindfuck. Otherwise, I think the creator got a bit lost in the layers of symbolism he was heaping on, and the show started to buckle a bit. It certainly is a product of a time when Eastern philosophy was more novel in the west, I think. I can easily see how it would influence internet culture, as well. The mental illness attraction makes more sense to me, maybe not the tranner side though. I was a bit worried for more sexuality and I was glad to see less of it.
