There's an estimated 1,168.7 metric tons of cremation remains in them altogether. That's over 1,288 short tons. Graves 1, 3, 4, 10, 13, 20, 25, 27, and 32 contain whole corpses as well. See at first the Nazis just dumped all of the bodies from the gas chambers straight into pits and covered them. Then in 1943 they discovered the mass graves from the Soviet's 1940 Katyn massacre. They realized oh shit, it's been three years and these tightly packed corpses have barely decomposed. And since they wanted to keep what they were doing secret they had slave laborers (Sonderkommandos) exhume the bodies buried at Belzec and burn them, refilling the pits with the ashes.
