i got a chance to visit japan earlier in the year, 37 and my first time leaving the states.
i don't claim to know everything about their culture or hardships but god dammit was it a peaceful place to be, a super impressive place both in and outside tokyo how you can be on a crowded train in tokyo during rush hour and no one talks beyond a whisper, no one j-walks, every one is police even if they feel differently about tourists and it kills me hearing about people mistreating their country.
was lucky enough to take a short trip out into the country and it genuinely pissed me off coming back to america afterwards. shit's so fucked here, even when i get away from the city and suburbs to visit my sister in the countryside i find i'm still not at peace the same way i was other there, bumping into people who are so loud on trails or seeing discarded trash in our national parks.
i kick myself for not trying harder in school to get some a work visa so i could legally go over there and how i've struggled with languages and education in school my entire life. always felt like there was nothing really worth working for here + a well off financially but troubled emotional upbringing with a parent killing themselves which to this day even after years of therapy still messes with my brain. idk, maybe it's just post trip depression and i should get out more and life can still change but i'm just so down about it

I have never been there myself, but watching those "A walk through *Japanese city*" videos, watching music videos, seeing Japanese architecture, and watching makoto shinkai films really makes me feel that "peace" you're talking about.

Then again, I never grew out of my weeaboo phase. Maybe if I actually lived there, I'd soon realize it's not that great after a year or two. I'd have to give up everything I have to live there, so I just keep daydreaming about it instead. Still has been my dream since I was 14 though.
