Good luck with your lynching. Don't worry, we won't show the FBI this thread.

Actually, that's not it, sorry. Its the second knot in this video.

I think it's a running bowline.

The tricky thing is that I think one part of the square knot has been 'rotated'

Actually I suppose it's not a flying bow man because it does the blue route not the black route, so that square knot doesn't get formed

Me again, this isn't it either, I couldn't see properly on my phone, sorry

This anon has it, but I've got no idea what its called, it's not any type of bowline. I can't find it in my knots app which has like 30 types of loop knot.
Can you give us any more info on it? Who tied the one in the photo?
>>
>>1564857
I have no further information other than that they used it to tie down a tarp, so it must be a slipknot as already mentioned.

I think I got it. That's what happens to a trucker's hitch when the main part of it collapses. I think you're looking at the 2 half hitches used to secure the tail end of a trucker 's hitch. Just search for that on YouTube or Google. There's a couple of ways to tie it, one where it just collapses when tension is removed.

Surely by this point there should be a systematic nomenclature no?

There are several.

-L^10 - 5L-8 - 5L^-6 + 5M^L^-8 + 10M^2L^-6 - M^4L^-8 - 6M^4L^-6 + M^6L^-6

That's like OP's knot. Does that help?

It's different to the running bowline which is either
2L^-6 + 3L^-4 - M^2L^-6 - 4M^2L^-4 + M^4L^-4
when the working end of the line is extended so that it does not pass through the first loop the standing end passes through or
-2L^-4 - 4L^-2 - 1 + M^2L^-4 + 4M^2L^-2 + M^2 - M^4L^-2
when the working end does pass through that loop closest to the standing end and they're both on the same side of that loop.

Either way those long lines are knot invariants. If they are not the same then the knots they describe are not the same either.

None of those expressions represent the knots named or shown in OP's pic, they represent the knots shown in my pic which are like the knots named or shown in OP's pic except with their ends joined. The red section of each knot I drew is where the ends are joined, that's where I started and ended my sketches and then joined the ends so that the values could be calculated.

I also tried a trucker's hitch but that also came out different. Didn't matter if I did it on computer or by hand, I couldn't manipulate a trucker's hitch to make it equivalent to what is seen in OP's pic.

I sketched my very first knot from OP's pic and then used the pic from >>1564846 to sketch a knot and both versions agreed so this anon and I agreed on how the OP's knot looks which is nice.

I don't know what sort of knot it is but it's not any that I've tried which have been suggested in this thread.

If you tie this type of truckers hitch:
https://knots3d.com/en/truckie-hitch-knot
And the lower attachment is a hook instead of an eye, and secure the working end with 2 half-hitches around the left-most piece of rope only, then collapse the truckers hitch by manipulating the upper loops while it's slack, you will end up with exactly OP's knot. I've tried in RL.
A truckers hitch makes sense for securing a tarp, whereas op's knot doesn't.

I want to learn how to tie at least two basic knots that are useful for almost everything. One for securing and another for tensioning. I would appreciate your help
>>
>>1565400
A bowline is excellent for attaching a rope to almost anything as it will untie effortlessly no matter how much tension is applied.
The truckers hitch is good for tensioning and can be cascaded to the point you can snap the rope by hand. There's a few ways to tie them with various advantages. This guy explains some and the pros and cons:

So, we don't know the name of the knot in the op?
