What are some japanese anime/manga you would recommend to a seasoned western fiction reader into the likes of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Hellblazer, Frank Miller's Daredevil, etc. but also Gene Wolfe and old school Sci-Fi/Fantasy Literature in general?

Shameless School and Abashiri family are also underrated. Akira (the manga is better than the movie)
