I've had this same chair since ~2020. I'm moving soon, and one of my roommates is insistent on me getting a new one. She says the pleather gets all over the house, she is correct. It does not squeak, it groans like a man hit in the balls. One of the wheels popped off and I can see the two wheels on either side of it buckling due to the sudden lack of support, about to snap off themselves at any moment. The stitching has burst at multiple points. The knob to adjust the lumbar support fell off years ago. If I lean to either side in my chair I can tell there's a point where there's supposed to be hydraulic pressure pushing against myself that just isn't there anymore. What pleather hasn't already worn off peels away like lead paint. The lever to lock the reclining feature will randomly get stuck and there's no way to unstick it until it decides it's good and ready. The padding of the seat is probably entirely condensed flat by now, with any supposed padding actually just being the springs and my larden ass, but I do not notice. Occasionally if I shift my weight in my seat or plop down too brazenly, the seat will lower itself by about a full inch because the hydraulics are failing.

It is by far the most comfortable chair I have ever sat in. I've tried "ergonomic" chairs and mesh chairs, they're never good. I've tried all manner of Herman Miller's at used furniture stores and thought to myself "There is no fucking way people are paying more than $50 on this shit". I need a high back because I am 6'1". I need a cushioned headrest so that I can rest my neck. And I need it to be <$400. As I said, I'll be moving soon so even more than usual, I don't have that much to spare on this luxury.

Any suggestions are appreciated, and before this gets brought up: Yes I do intend to also look at local used furniture stores and have in the past, but everything is either shitty mesh or massively over-priced (often both, fuck this city).

Are you me?

I have a similar office chair just as beat up and peeled except I don't have any plans on getting rid of it because it still works. Matter of fact, I tried to replace it once and passed the new one off (cheap one bought off Amazon) and kept the beat up one so gave up for a while.

I have basically realized that if i am to replace this one, I would end up going to an office store and testing those out and picking one even though I know they are expensive as fuck and not cool looking like gamer chairs and foot rest would be out of the question because office chairs don't have that but oh well.

The only other thing I'd say is to consider Costco or something because they usually have a very small selection of decently priced chairs and usually their products are decent quality for the not-so-expensive price but only if you could return it if you don't like it and normally that's a given but since it would be assembled, I'm not sure if there's some sort of catch on that like they wouldn't accept it being returned.

That's the only advice I can really give.

Actually it is fucking hysterical you mentioned trying to find a new chair only to be scorned by it; my initial attempt to get rid of this thing was with a Staples Hyken, commonly revered for tall folks. Assembled it and sat down only for the headrest to dig into the exact bone that transitions your back to your neck. Had to huck it off to one of my roommates and lost $30 in the process.

That aside, I have been looking at some Costco options as well as a few offerings from Staples, but just as you said, I'm hesitating to pull the trigger because I need to be able to try it out in-person and simply getting to a Costco or a Staples would be an ordeal in-itself since I don't presently have a car.
