I have an 8 year old computer running on Windows 8.1 installed on a 250GB HDD with a 1TB (internal) SSD for data.I want to move to Linux (Mint preferably) so I got another 1TB (internal) SSD recently and installed that.The new SSD is currently unallocated, and I don't know if I should initialize/format it now or install Linux on it first, or even how to do that. All the tutorials I've seen focus on partitioning, but do I even need to partition when I've got a fresh SSD I want to install Linux on? Isn't partitioning for when both OS' are installed on one drive? Could installing Linux on a separate SSD still attached to the same MOBO fuck with the HDD Windows 8.1 is installed on?
>>1572981Use the Linux installer to format it with one of the Linux filesystems (btrfw, xfs, ext4...).You technically can directly put a filesystem on a "whole drive" but actually you want the usual partitions so you have EFI boot for the bios and the usual partition metadata and alignment (that may or may not matter somewhat)... which you'd probably even want if you didn't even have EFI boot. it's just less trouble to do the standard layout and give it those 4kib or whatever it takes now to have the partition table.also /g/ is probably more for this and follow-up questions, i just randomly saw this.
