there was a website someone linked that contained a bunch of books you could freely read. does anyone know what I might be referring to? It had everything, a bunch of books for computer programming and networking.

Nice try, publishing intern. You’ve killed so many sites. Isn’t that enough?

not exactly the website i'm looking for but it seems to have a lot of what I need anyway, thanks. I suspect the other website went down since it would've been in my tabs and the only way I would've closed it is if it reported a dead link after refreshing.

>there was a WEBSITE ... that contained ... books you could freely read.

Your public library may already subscribe to online ebook databases providing access to such a WEBSITE containing books you can freely read. My library does when I login to my user account at the library website and then access ebooks thru the portal linked to my public library website. It's free for library patrons to use while logged in courtesy of the taxpayers voting for many library improvements in a county-wide bond election. If your city or county voters dun lik does books cuz hoes or wrecking things iz more fun, then maybe your library won't have budget for such an expensive service. Check with your public library anyways to see what online or ebooks services it has. My library has ebooks, most magazines, many journals, and government documents available online.

If you use Firefox, and have either its "Open New Tab" or "Homepage" set in preferences to display a set of clickable site icons, why not put either Annas Archive or the Shadow Libraries as an icon. Hover over one of the icons and then click on the three dots appearing in the upper right corner of that icon. Paste the URL of either Annas or Shadow and then edit the title of that icon. It should be pinned and you can drag that icon to a better location on that page.

Annas Archive
https://annas-archive.pk/

Shadow Archives
https://shadowlibraries.github.io/

If you do come across really private archive sites, and they do exist out there UNdefended by logins, don't repost about their existence. There are infrastructure reasons for their existence and there's no need for hastening their downfall.

Archive.org has a ton of books.

>Archive.org has a ton of books.
They once had lots of Out-Of-Print books available for online reading via a checkout loan interface. They were trying to resemble a library where you checkout a book to read. Archive.org maintained that by purchasing or being gifted original print books. If they had only one copy, then they only made one copy available for online loan. If they had two copies, then two copies were available for online loan. Nice approach.

Due to multiple lawsuits against archive.org, a lot of mainstream entertainment-type books were removed from general availability. But if you are looking for non-entertainment books such as "A Dictionary of the Bible" then you can still read those.
