The only "interesting" vtuber I saw was some skitzo who would upload rants and rambles and accuse people of trying to kill him or being Soviets.. he didn't last very long

Just cosmetics along with contour tape can work wonders. A filter can then be applied not as the main visual feature, but to alter the voice a little.

Some stay energetic the whole time they're live.
Others don't, some keep it pretty mellow, but if you're only watching clips of them, you get a biased perspective and think they're always high energy too, because that's all you're ever seeing.
