Hi there! I need some help. A few months ago, I accidentally quick-formatted my external hard drive with a lot of files/file folders that were placed in the recycle bin. I am not a computer person and I have a ton of respect to those who know a lot about them. Also, I am new here so I am still trying to figure out all of the controls.

Why just now if it's been months? Depending on usage a lot will have been overwritten.

Well, in the time since the format happened and now, I just haven't been using the drive at all. I tried various recovery tools on my C: drive but I just can't seem to access the data.

Sounds like you stole it to access data you’re not supposed to.

I've had my external hard drive for about a year now since I bought it for my laptop. It's a 2TB WD Elements portable external hard drive, and I just don't know enough about computers and code to figure this stuff out on my own.

Buy yourself a new drive double the size of your disk, in this case you'd like a 4tb
Download HDD Raw Copy
https://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/
Using this tool create a DD style image of your drive, be sure to follow a guide. If you use this tool wrong you could nuke some unrelated drive, here's a random guide

Now all recovery attempts will be done on your HDD image. Try out whatever programs you can figure out, stuff like DiskGenius, PhotoRec, Recuva, EaseUS, Disk Drill or whatever
