I got told by my mechanic that the 97 Camry is on its last legs. They've been telling me that for years but apparently the power steering leak it has has affected other parts of the car and now it'll cost thousands to repair. I'm being encouraged by everyone I know to just get a new car and stop holding onto my old beater. The thing is, I'm terrified of spending some ridiculous amount of money for a new car, even a used one. If I buy something I need it to last a long time. I don't like buying crap that'll break down in 5 years or is insanely costly or hard to repair. It would also be preferable if my car wasn't tracking me and spying on me for 3 letter agencies and insurance companies. I'm terrified of having to spend 10's of thousands on a new car, even a used one. I live with my parents because I can't afford rent unless I find 2 or 3 dedicated friends to live with me and share the rent. I'm not sure how to approach this problem in a financially sane way. I have 20K in the bank and that's it. I think I want a truck, maybe a hatchback idk. Does anyone have any recommendations? sites, car makes/models/years? Advice maybe?
