The pilot left Malaysian airspace and immediately made a turn. This allowed maximum time before Vietnamese response to the plane not arriving. It then ran out of fuel and crashed in the Indian ocean. The mystery is why he did this.

No. The communications were cut deliberately and the turn could only have been done by an experienced pilot. He turned immediately after leaving Malaysian airspace so him going off course wouldn't be noticed.
