Difficult and high topics are draining
If the default state of the mind is being on autopilot (described above) then the more information it has to process the more energy it needs. Energy that is used to keep the amnesia barriers in place (described above). The more energy it tries to use for the cognitive load that are high concepts, the more it has to take that energy from the barriers increasing the risk of flooding the conscious mind with the terrors.

The types of topics
There are two types of topics that can be difficult to think about in this state:
Complex but impersonal topics:
Topics that require a lot of information to be processed, understood and worked with. These topics include: science, mathematics, biology, history, sociology, etc… (all that requires the understanding of huge, usually global systems)
Existential or personal topics:
These topics also require a lot of information processing and on top of that, it requires knowledge about ones self. These topics include: the meaning of life, why are we here?, what is my purpose?, what is Love?, what is Evil?, etc… (all this requires the understanding of big system and also understanding of ones own mind and soul)
The second type also requires reflection, if reflection isn’t possible it is impossible to think about ones purpose in life.
“Stupidity” or rather the perceived lack of cognitive abilities is thought to be a permanent state of the mind for certain people. In reality it is just the restrictions from traumas. There was a time where implication and symbolic imagery was a key part of storytelling. It was so prevalent if you missed it in a story you'd be confused by the rest of it. Dealing with abstraction and implication is something that hasn't been transmitted well generation to generation and it's leaving pretty quickly such that there are actually kids collecting extremely simple symbolic-looking images (see thread) because they need to be reminded it's real.
