I tend to start with casual conversation for at least a couple of weeks after we first meet and then just reference political things until THEY bring up their political standing. Then you can insert a minor conspiracy that you hold into a conversation and then see if they have any themselves. Then at that point I'd say they'd be more open to talking about the paranormal. Perhaps bringing up religion could help as well.
