If you accept the Book of Mormon as a guide, an individual who preserved the plates of the Book of Mormon and who was translated into the role of an angel.

If you don't accept that - the next reasonable explanation is that Joseph Smith met a spirit, a treasure guardian. This was common in America within his region and others saw similar figures. This is discussed at length in the book, "Early Mormonism and the Magic World View," by D. Michael Quinn.

Could be have been a deity that Smith mistook for a prophet?
>>
From Quakers and Shakers to Scientology. USA gave birth to so many crazy religions.

>Bro, an angel showed me some golden plates containing the final testament
>Can we see the plates?
>Sorry dude, the angel took them away. You have to trust me on this.
>ok
Why are Americans like this?

Potentially. Quinn's work goes over this in more detail, but he gives example of an early attested story about Smith seeing a toad or reptile when he went to acquire the plates in Hill Cumorah; it goes that when he visited the reptile shifted, morphed, into a human figure. This being close in theme with other elemental spirits or treasure-guardians. Swedenborg, for example, saw salamanders and reptiles in vision before he saw heaven. So it fits the context of Euro-American magicka at the time.

It is possible, if you believe in say American Indian spirits or local spirits, that he was tricked by one of these entities. There were others who used Seer Stones to find treasure that have similar stories about the "Red Men" having vast lost civilizations and buried treasure.

This is not what happened. The Three and Eight witnesses + others saw, felt, and described the plates. The three saw Moroni in vision alongside seeing the plates naturally. Suggested reading is: Richard Lloyd Anderson's "Investigating the Book of Mormon Witnesses," Larry E. Morris, "A Documentary History of the Book of Mormon."

Most Americans in the region were, but Smith was not a Freemason until he founded the city of Nauvoo. His brother Hyrum and his father were Masons as common custom at the time. I've got a buddy who's privy to the records of these things that records Joseph Smith lambasting Masonry - in my view he saw it as a means to an end rather than anything truly magical. However, Cheryl Bruno contests that reading, describes JS as a master ritualist, in her work "Method Infinite".

Twin Peaks was referencing the, sort of, Anglo-Indian folk magic of the 1700-1800s. Alongside Theosophy, Buddhism, and conspiracy culture of the 90s America. Mormonism is not referenced in the show.

That they saw some kind of golden-looking plates is not much evidence of anything, though, nor are visions to sympathetic witnesses.

Compare to e.g. the apostle Paul, whose experience of the risen Christ switched around his entire allegiance from a zealous, enthusiastic persecutor of Christianity to a zealous, enthusiastic evangelist of it.

Mormonism's cool though

according to mormons he's the spirit of one of the deceased prophets who wrote in the Book of Mormon. if you don't believe that theory you'd probably conclude either Joseph Smith made him up or he was some kind of evil spirit who deceived him.
