Everyone I know who has dabbled in this practice has stopped due to powerful real world results.

I don't believe simply in 'magic' per say but I have experienced a pattern in everyone who becomes involved gets real world results to the degree of their own trauma.

Why is this?

Really? I got negligible results with chaos magic. Grimoire magic was a lot more rewarding. And I don't know about that "trauma" theory.

I found it to be a useless discipline. Magic does have laws and no amount of 'belief' will change that.
