Here is a really fascinating way to look at the Fire, Earth, Air, Water elements of the 12 signs of the zodiac.

First, let's start off by assuming that they equate to the four Jungian functions, so that,

Fire is the Intuition Function.
Earth is the Sensation Function.
Air is the Thinking Function.
Water is the Feeling Function.

Now, to be clear, let us define these "functions".

Sensation tells us what physically exists.
Thinking creates a symbol to represent it with.
Feeling tells us how agreeable or disagreeable it is.
Intuition tells us what the origin of it was or might have been, and what else it could be or could become.

Now, to really get even more insight into those functions, we look at what are called the "triplicity rulers" of each "sect" in astrology. There are two "sects", one belonging to the day and one to the night. The day is called the diurnal sect and the night is called the nocturnal sect. Each element has a set of three rulers, one for the day, one for the night, and one that cooperates with both. This is where the magic happens. If you break down each of the four functions as being like it's own stand-alone-complex -- having an extroverted side, an introverted side, and an ambiverted side of its own -- then each element has a kind of default archetype to it that everyone who is of that "type" is going to exhibit as the central theme of their life.

For example, if we look at the Air Triplicity, by day it is ruled by Saturn, at night Mercury, and at both times, Jupiter. Saturn represents control and restriction, wanting things neat and tidy, in the extroverted role, and Mercury, representing clear communication and fair trade in the introverted role, with Jupiter, representing wisdom and freedom, in the ambiverted role. So at all times, to be a "thinking" sort of person, you want everything organized, but you also want to speak clearly and be understood, and for everything to always be "fair". Makes sense, no?

So it is for every element.
