As each cycle transitions, there is a gradual decline in morality, intellect, knowledge, cognitive capacity, lifespan, emotional well-being, and physical strength.

Ancient Indians used both lunar and solar calendars; their lunar calendar averaged 354.36 days per year, while the solar calendar averaged 365.24 days.

This calculation of the Yuga cycles was explained by Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri (the guru of Paramahansa Yogananda) in the 19th century in his book *The Holy Science*. He stated that the descending phase of the Kali Yuga began in September 499 BCE, and the ascending phase of the Dvapara Yuga began in September 1699 CE. He wrote, "When Emperor Maharaja Yudhishthira saw the darkness of the Kali Yuga beginning to envelop the world, he abdicated the throne to his heir and, along with the wise sages, retired into seclusion in the Himalayas. Consequently, no one in the royal court clearly knew the principles determining the calculation of the Yugas."

Yukteswar explained that this Yuga cycle is calculated based on the movement of celestial bodies. For instance, the Earth rotates on its axis and is influenced by sunlight; similarly, the changing of seasons occurs as the Earth orbits the Sun. The movement of the entire solar system creates a massive centre of energy (called Vishnunabhi), around which the Sun revolves. This is the centre of the creative power of the Divine, exerting a gravitational pull that influences the moral and spiritual state of the world.

Currently, there is much debate regarding the calculation of the Yuga cycles, as well as the final Kali Yuga. Both Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri and Sri Aurobindo posited that we are currently in the Dvapara Yuga, and that the duration of the Kali Yuga is 2,400 Deva years. Conversely, Kullu Bhatta asserted that the Kali Yuga lasts for 432,000 years, of which 4,994 years had passed by 1894, leaving 427,600 years remaining.

Meanwhile, the astrological treatise "Surya Siddhanta", the foundation of Buddhist and Hindu calendar calculations, records that the Kali Yuga began at midnight (00:00) on February 28, 3102 BCE (Julian calendar), or January 23, 3102 BCE (Gregorian calendar).

Hindu scriptures state that when the Kali Yuga began and Lord Krishna departed the Earth to return to the heavenly realm, the Asura Demon King rose from the grave at that very moment, engaging in a terrifying battle with the Goddess Kali.
The Kali Yuga is represented by the destructive deity Kalki, wielding a sword, who is the final avatar of Lord Vishnu, the embodiment of cosmic destruction. Many believe that at the end of this cycle, Kalki will return on a white horse with his retinue to wage war. The world will endure a fiery battle, all evil will be destroyed, and the prosperous Satya Yuga era will begin anew.
Although referred to as a deity, the demon Kali is also the lord of demons, the ruler of the underworld who determines the fate of humanity.
The gods and the forces of darkness engaged in a great battle. However, being weaker, the lesser gods were defeated. Durga, the mother of the goddesses, was summoned for assistance. With an infinitely serene countenance, she descended from the heavens riding a lion to join the battle. Her ten arms wielded ten mystical weapons, and she became the centre of a destructive vortex.

During the combat, Durga wounded the Demon King. From the demon's falling drops of blood, countless lesser demons were born; yet, with the power of the Supreme Goddess, she swiftly sealed their fate.

She fought her enemies with fierce exaltation. When her spiritual power reached its zenith, the destructive Goddess Kali emanated from her forehead. Kali, meaning the darkness of light, clad in a tiger skin, wore a necklace strung with skulls. With wild fury and the wrath of a frenzied mother protecting her children, she began to savagely devour the demon army. In her ravenous hunger and bloodlust to colour her victory, she devoured the Demon King alive. The demon army, defeated and panicked, fled, and peace was restored to the realm of the gods.

When flowers bloom within flowers, and fruits bear fruits within fruits, the Yuga comes to an end. Untimely rains appear. Lord Vishnu will be reborn, returning to Earth, and everything will begin anew.

Hindus believe that humanity is currently in the Kali Yuga, an era of spiritual degeneration and alienation from the Divine. In Sanskrit, "Kali" means strife, discord, quarrel, or dispute.

In the "Mahabharata", the sage Markandeya explains the Kali Yuga cycle as follows:

>- Governance becomes irrational: justice gradually disappears.
>- Rulers become oblivious to their duties, neglecting the promotion of spiritual development; instead, to protect their own interests, they become a danger to the world.
>- People begin to migrate to lands where staple foods are abundant.

>- Ignorance and a lack of faith in the Dharma prevail.
>- Promiscuity is favoured, and sexuality is considered the ultimate ideal of life.

>- People become terrified and begin to pray to God.
>- Humanity indulges in drunkenness and revelry.
>- Feeling their minds on the verge of melting away, people yearn for inner peace and tranquillity.
>- Spiritual masters are no longer respected, and disciples recklessly defy their teachers' instructions.

According to the calendar, we are currently in the very last cycle—the Kali Yuga—before everything begins anew.

In Buddhist cosmology (Cakkavatti-Sīhanāda Sutta), human moral decline is linked to a dramatic shortening of lifespan. The story describes a cycle in which humans initially live for 80,000 years. But as greed, violence, dishonesty, and sexual misconduct increase, society deteriorates. Each generation becomes less virtuous, and human lifespan gradually decreases over immense periods of time. The decline eventually reaches a nadir: people live only 10 years. At that point, children mature extremely early, food is scarce, and even minor conflicts escalate into lethal violence.
In Buddhist cosmology, a kalpa (aeon) is an immense span of time. Some traditional Buddhist cosmologies do attempt numerical calculations. For example, they may describe lifespan decreasing by one year every century. Under that scheme, a drop from 80,000 years to 10 years would take roughly 8 million years.

This is probably the most elegant cosmology anywhere in recorded history. It lays out a framework so rich and complete that it's not difficult to overlay modern knowledge of astronomy, plasma physics and consciousness onto it almost seamlessly.
It seems to be charting our solar system's great journey around the mysterious Galactic core, perhaps to a far greater accuracy than we can currently check. More energy, or more sympathetic resonance, something like that, may be the physical mechanism at play, and depending on alignments with other star systems, distance to the center, and all the minutiae of astrology but applied on a galactic scale perhaps.
