Great topic. Hopefully the thread takes off. Two thoughts. Native Americans in North America would create symbols to remind them of specific stories that were important to them. A sort of written language, but instead of words, they symbols function to recall a story of shared heritage. So it's basically a story whose meaning died with the people that made it.
