Our ego is the single most important barrier and defense system that protects us from being annihilated by external forces. Animals have only one sphere of perception which only extends to will and in some more advanced animal forms like dogs to feeling. Only humans have the sphere of reason and self-reflection which interacts with the sphere of will and feeling by talking hence why we have an internal dialogue and animals dont, hence why they cant talk.
