I also experimented with sleep deprivation 2-3 days being awake to reach a state of hallucinations (used coffeine to stay awake for university exams and finishing engineering drafts/statical loads and load bearing calcs/documentation/turn ins/consultation in a very limited time frame with a shitton of work done and memory being pretty much overloaded) By the end of the experiment, I was a different person. The experience closest resembled the described state as schisophrenics go through their daily life. On my way home the hallucination was the most intruiging. Other mind altering states I had is I believe related to opiates, and thought it might be genetic trait or sensitivity. Granny was a medical doctor, but end of her life she was given opiates, while recovering in the hospital. Still lived for months, but her end was close. Her experience resembled the same as mine decades later. Fully hallucinated an extra staff member overwatching the sick people in the intensive care unit. Capable of having full discussion with the entity, but also realizing it's not real, for feeling odd about it, and telling other patients history, stories and family secrets, discussing cires, treatmenst that she of course disregarded for understanding it's a hallucination, but describing this experience almost spiritual.

Decades later, in 2019, I had an intensive care incident - double lung pneumonia, low oxygen, so put to coma +recovery -, and due to circumstances I also was given opiates, and I had the same or similar experience. An extra person appearing in the room, observing, walking around, talking, having conversations with the staff. Had red gown, which was odd, while nurses had green and doctors blue, yet was commanding all the staff to do tasks, and reassuring, helping, pointing out issues or flaws in the process applied, which the nurses seemed to corrected. The entity was male late 30s, early 40s, and other than bossing around the doctors, nurses, patients, nothing was that off. Yet, I knew it was not real, and asked around what's with the color scheme of gowns, not trying to bust that I fully hallucinate, which turned out red was not used.. Also tried to figure out if the given informations, conversations, names slipped were real or not, but trying not to freak out anyone. .

From what I gathered of the conversations, one of the male nurses was skimming off some drugs from the inventory, had a car accident not long prior, also father of 2 kids I guess, and the head nurse was warning him he needs to go clean, and get himself together for his kids. Also two nurse trainees had an affair, so pretty of clues unfolding to confirm or not if the red gown entity was telling real or not. Of course, you can't exclude if all the details was a hallucination in itself (let's face it it probably was). From what I gathered the red gowned entity tried to take care of the sick, and claimed to helping, so I just observed it doing it's job, doing whatever otherworldly it was up to, and not cause panic (kinda understood it was a hallucination) Multiple times it appeared throughput the days, and after being cut off the drugs never seen it again, but the informations/clues/details seemed to be true

obsessing over the voices will just lead you astray because demons love to make illusions to fuck with you. hearing voices is considered sufficient criteria for being insane, so it's sorta hard to quantify when you are really "losing touch with reality".
i think a lot of it has to do with your intelligence and mental fortitude. Schizophrenia literally destroys your brain so people become more and more stupid while they are faced with increasingly extreme demands on their mind. It becomes harder to think rationally because of that component, not necessarily just the fact that you have a second reality to cope with on top of your first one.
