So what did Julius Evola recommend to progress through the stages of alchemy toward self refinement? What practices? His book on the topic was mostly philosophy.
Evola's practical esoteric knowledge is drawn from Giulanno Kremerz's Hermetic school and Italian Martinism, so the beginning is going to be some kind of concentration exercise to cultivate the state of consciousness of silence and calm that enables an experience of the reality of the spirit, or isolating the Prima Materia as it would be explained alchemically, which is the prerequisite for actually doing alchemy. There's an author called David Pantano who has translated two works from Italian into English, one is on the Alchemical Hermeticism of Marco Daffi, and one on the Hermetic teachings of the previously mentioned Giulanno Kremmerz, both of which are the kinds of systems that Evola would have studied and practiced. As for learning just from Evola's works, the Hermetic Tradition as it sounds you have read is more of a "map" then an "engine", in that it provides you a framework for what progression looks like but doesn't really explain -how- to progress, there's not an obvious praxis in that book. For this, the "Introduction to Magic" series contains praxis that will enable you to gain the self refinement you're looking for. I would also recommend Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism if you're new to initiatory work, the first chapter on the Magician is very illuminating and can easily be found free online.
