repostinJust finished watching “Gerald’s Game,” a Netflix original horror film about a woman who gets handcuffed to a bed by her husband and then gets trapped there when something bad happens to the husband, I don’t want to spoil too much but it was an interesting premise for a horror film. Almost the entire movie takes place in the room she’s trapped in, with most of the dialogue happening between her and her own hallucinations. There’s not much in terms of scares, I guess a few moments that are ok, but the real horror of the movie is from the psychological trauma the protagonist goes through as she starts having flashbacks of the abuse she suffered as a child, generally creeped me out a lot. The husband was also a creep and it was hard to watch them together when she clearly wasn’t into it. The film was mostly about misogyny and the objectification of women by men, the real villains were the men in her life, you’ll honestly want to reach through the screen and punch them. There’s some pretty gross scenes involving a dog, but the climax of the movie features an incredibly gory sequence that had me genuinely engrossed and disgusted, some of the best gore I’ve seen in a while!I will say, the ending is really, really strange. There’s a twist that honestly just makes me want to laugh at how ridiculous it is, I don’t want to spoil much but she hallucinates a lot during the movie, and one thing you thinks he’s hallucinating turns out to be real, it’s a trip.The movie is generally pretty slow moving and drags on in the middle a bit, it’s interesting to see her resourcefulness as she tries to survive her situation I guess, but I’d honestly recommend it just for the one gore scene that was really top notch! I was really rooting for her to survive after all the shit she went through, haven’t empathized this much with a character in a while.My snacks for the night were pop chips, Oreo cookies, an almond snickers, chicken wings, and OJ! :D
