I always thought there was wisdom behind the way and timing of miracles beyond the will of one performing them but… why on earth did Jesus ride a donkey all the way to Jerusalem instead of levitating and flying there? Did the donkey have to suffer carrying a person across the mount of olives?

It was important he rode in on a donkey. It was symbolic, and referential. Symbolic in that the donkey is the pack animal of peace, whereas the mount of war is the horse. Referential to the way Dionysus entered Thebes, exiting in an extravagant train and retinue of maenads.
