Christianization was the reason for this. Christians forbade Europeans from washing themselves. They banned their bathhouses, because when people are naked together, it is a sin. The bathhouses were sometimes reused as monasteries for monks - but when the monks were “spared” during pandemics even though they cared for the sick, people preferred to attribute this to God rather than to the fact that the monks lived in a bathhouse and had better hygiene than most other people.
