I like the old "Phantom Airships" of the late 1890s in the US, mostly the western areas. It seems very likely that at least some of them were hoaxes and publicity stunts, and once the flap got going people reported things that are pretty obviously meteors and such. But the whole thing had enough bizarre elements that they're interesting to look into. There are overlaps with more modern UFo reporting, but elements that don;t match at all as well.

If any went down from that high up the Vatican probably didn't even have a clue where to begin looking for crashes beyond a vague general direction.
