At least with horror movies you know what might be coming. I’ve watched a lot of movies and there is obscene gross crap in way more than just horror movies. I don’t even want to give some examples. Then there is comedy movies and shit that usually ain’t funny but break the commandments in some way. And the audience is supposed to act like it’s normal and funny. There are few movies that are actually pleasant and not evil.

I am of the opinion that horror movies and comedy movies are just two sides of the same coin. Both movie types depend upon the subversion of expectations and surprise to evoke a specific emotion from the viewer. Fear or laughter, or both in the case of dark comedies. Some people just enjoy being scared, it's an adrenaline rush. Nothing particularly paranormal about that. Replace horror movies with any other hobby that induces similar feelings.

movies are essentially magical rituals, hollywood movies especially are designed to open you up so that something can be let in. they do this by making you go through a rollercoaster of emotions, mirth and sorrow, fear and rage, disgust and admiration. when you watch these movies enough you will eventually crack and the demons will enter. horror movies themselves act more as virgin sacrifices, forcing you to watch as beautiful things are destroyed and replaced with ugliness and be on board with it.

i recently watched Disclosure Day and it went hard into this magical and ritualistic aspect, just about every part of the movie is designed to make you go through harmonic opposites and generally feel like something is wrong (like how the movie starts and ends abruptly, or the hailstorm popping out of nowhere, or the scene where margaret gets a panic attack in the train and the movie strangely focuses on the creepy pianos) but curiously what entered me doesn't feel demonic, just different. the movie didn't have any obscene scenes in it (i am quite sensitive towards them) despite it's weird nature it felt wholesome and it activated something in me that was hidden for so long. apparently it's available on vod-services now so i might watch it again at some point.

Horror movies have always been lower budget, the scripts can be garbage too, but people will interpret anything omitted as mysterious.
