The stories go deep, obviously in the ice age we spent a lot of time in caves and they live rent free in our minds for a very long time. Many ancient societies like the Greeks and Romans would fumble around in them for sacred knowledge and rituals and so on and so forth. I guess psychologically you can say they sort of are between life (the surface) and death (burial) and are deeply yonic etc. Those ideas still live with us today with things like jesus being dead and coming back to life in a cave like mithras, mohammed hiding from persecution in a cave, etc.

There’s a funny story from the Christianization of Mexico where missionaries go into a cave said to lead to the underworld in order to disprove the indians’ superstitious ideas and then a gust of wind blows their torches out and they immediately nope out of there and wall the place off. I think the place was called Lyobaa. I’ll post the story later.
