I think some truths are multidimensional and difficult to see and understand from a single fixed point. Drugs can rapidly shift your consciousness enough to see things differently. They may be a quick, dirty, and easy way to change ones perspective, but not the only way. I think there is danger in drugs when one becomes too reliant on them, or believes it's the only way.
